Random question, I have a Spa Pool around 800-900L of water. Always had the temp set to about 40c and the controller was on automatic.

I want to use a product called SimpleSilver but that needs to have 80,000-100,000 L of flow per hour.

So I need to set my filter manually to run at a minimum 15 minutes per hour.

I have no idea on average how many minutes per hour it runs on automatic and I assume forcing it on for 15 minutes will flow water through the system but may not need to heat it.

My questions are

1. What's more expensive in the running costs the heating or the pumping of water?

2. What do you think this will do to the power bill?

You need to know the pumps flow rate....

but I think you will need more than 15 mins per hour

If you need 80,000 l/h and you have 800 litres, that means you need to totally circulate the water 100 times every hour, or 1.7 times a minute, @800 litres that's pumping ~ 1500 litres per minute... that sounds like a pretty big pump....

That will be very expensive. You should consult the Spa maker to see if there is a better solution.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

OP: Are you sure you have those numbers right?

25 litres per second (2.5 buckets per second) is quite a pump

Website says this;

It is critical that your filter circulation pump circulates between 80-100,000 litres of water daily

Your calculation will be as follows:
If your filter circulation pump flow rate is 150 litres per minute
150 litres per minute x 60 minutes = 9000 litres per hour
A flow rate of 100,000 litres is needed, then divide this by 9000 litres per hour = 11.11 hours
Set your filter circulation pump controller to operate for 11 hours each day

Heating by far will be the big power user, around 3KW for a typical spa pool

daily, sounds a whole lot better than hourly :)

means. 100 cycles per day, ~4-5 cycles per hour,

So if you want to run the pump for 15 mins per hour you need to check it can pump ~250 litres per minute...

Yes, their website outlines by Spa model is to be set to 15 minutes.

So I'm going to assume for the time being (and check before I do anything) that will work.

Ultimately what I'm trying to work out is

1. Is the automatic option going to be much cheaper than this?

2. Is having just the pump going for 15 mins not too power hungry vs actually heating of the water which I assume is costly.

At 80,000L per hour it may have been unsafe to enter the pool when they pump was running!
