So we are on the hunt for some replacement downlights as some of our fittings have broken:

Our wishlist looks like this:

900lm minimum

Available in Cold White and Warm White

Dimmable for at least 6 units, 8 we don't require dimming

Ideally 120 degree beam angle

CRI > 90

IC but ideally ICF.

Seems like I can find about 3-4 of these specs but not really all of them.

Our cut out is 90mm

Anyone have better google fu than me.

Yeah, I can find plenty at >80

Looks damn near perfect, and is nicely priced too, but again, CRI 80+, ideally esp in our bedroom, CRI 90+ is ideal.

Most LEDs are only >80 CRI. Have hardly seen any that are more than this, and I suspect those are very expensive. You could ask an electrican as they will be able to tell you the brands that they have the best luck with. I am using Halcyon on a new house but their CRI listed isn't >90. Generally the larger the cutout, the more lumins the light is, so you could always extend your cutout.

I am not worried so much about Lumens. The 900+ ones will be PLENTY I suspect. Quality of light is probably more important.

Switch-lighting have some high CRI ones, but they don't meet some of the other specs and like you said, are pretty expensive.

OK a local friend of mine designs these LED down-lights and gets them manufactured in China.

Looks like the Platinum series can be ordered in CRI >90. He doesn't mention a beam angle though.

Probably worth giving him a call as his website and documents are a little underwhelming.

He also sells these through Drury Active Electrical Supplies.

@suckerpunch thanks I gave him a call and got a quote.

I am wondering if we should pay what looks to be, around $20-30 a fitting more, for a CRI of 90+ as opposed to less for the 80+ (which seem to sit around 83).

We are putting 15 LED's in initially, 4 in the lounge, 2 in the Kitchen, 3 in the master bedroom including the walk in wardrobe, and 2 in my office, 1 in my wifes office, and 1 in each bedroom for the kids.

I am leering of using different CRI's in different areas because the fittings are reasonably different in terms of appearance.

Check out brightgreen.com. They have some really nice quality fittings but are pricey. Available from ECC lighting. Also seen them on trade me, do a search.

That sounds very impressive at that spec for that money! Any ideas of the cut out size?

The Tilt model I have in front of me says it's got a 103mm trim diameter with a 83-95 cutout diameter.

Hi.

Are you a sparky? Seems like they are a distributor, and I assume I can't buy from them directly.

Also, their website doesn't make mention of lights that size unless I am going blind?

They look excellent and if I can get them for that price somehow I'd probably seriously consider it.

So I thought I'd update as to what we decided. Thanks to a fellow GZ I was able to get the Visionaries Technologies LED's for a great price, and we opted to try a variety of their lights for a bit of an experiment.

Their entry level, which isn't really entry level per se, but is their "low end" unit, is the Apollo 2. 900lm dimmable 82 cri and 7 year warranty. IC-F and 50K Life. We are going to put these in our lounge and my wifes office.

They have an Eve G4, which has a 10 Year Warranty, 1000lm and have an interesting thing, which I think would mostly be marketing but I like good marketing, where for a few dollars you can add either a blue light reduction feature, called "sleep" or studio, which raises the CRI to >97. We opted for sleep for 4 of our 5 master bedroom fittings, and 1 studio for our Walk in Wardrobe area. The sleep probably won't do much for us, as I often watch tv and play on my phone when in bed, and they both have blue light, however, I was interested to see them for just a few dollars. We are going warm white everywhere.

Ultimately, I could have saved some money by going to cheaper chinese fittings, it probably wouldn't have made much difference overall, but I like what a few of the NZ companies are trying to do to compete and felt the slightly nicer looking fittings and longer warranties were worth the extra.

I suspect overall, we may end up with Apollos everywhere else and may move the sleep fittings to our kids rooms.
