Are there different qualities of garage carpet or are they all much the same?
The one shop I went to, it was awful thin scratchy stuff.

They do vary a lot but even the good stuff would be described as somewhat scratchy - it needs to be - it's never going to be like Axminster shag-pile. Some of the good thicker stuff is made here in NZ by Autex Industries. Other stuff often comes from Europe. If you hold the thin stuff up to the light you can see through it. It's the old story - you get what you pay for.
We bought a brand-new house 3-4 years ago and one of the first things we did was get decent carpet put down in the garage. After that time it's still in really excellent condition. I'm very biased but love it every time I go in there - you won't regret doing it if you get good quality.

Funnily enough I am interested in this too.
I think some could be commercial/exterior carpets. And then how do you judge which types would last the longest in a garage?
My dad used some boat carpet (the blue stuff with black lines) in his garage and seems to work well for him. Just cut it himself, not meant to be a seamless finish as he likes to pull it all out and rinse it every few months.
Thanks! The one sample i saw you could see through.
Does anyone know a supplier of Autex garage carpets in Christchurch?

Proper garage carpet is made and marketed as 'garage carpet' - or maybe 'marine carpet'. It's not just a type of general carpet that you could put in a garage. Proper garage carpet is not easily confused with house carpet - you wouldn't want it inside your house. It's tough, fibrous, open-weave, non-stretch synthetic and the good stuff is thicker rather than thinner.

Best to give Autex a ring and ask them.
I just dug out the invoice for our garage carpet - August 2015. Carpet is Autex Raider - colour Tornado.
32 sq m @ $36/ sq m plus 'Superior' edging extrusion where the carpet starts as you drive into the garage. $1,265 all up incl GST.
This is 'supply and lay' and the guys did a beautiful job.
