Is it just me or is this heat pump quote high?  The company is reputable and the guy seemed really good, but the quoted price seems excessive to me.

Its for a medium bedroom (4.8x3.5) insulated ceiling.  The unit is a Daikan FTX-M20RVMZ Cora (2.7kW Heating/2.0kW cooling).  The installation is a back to back basically, although when I questioned the quote he said it wasnt because the outside unit will be wall mounted (at 1.2m high).  He also said because the wall is concrete block it is more expensive, which I find strange as a large percentage of houses would not be eligible for back to back if this was true (brick/concrete).  Also as the fuse board is old they need to replace the circuit breaker on the board to a more modern version (on this circuit) so it pushed the price up.  The circuit that the heat pump would be connected to is within 3m of the mounting location and walls and ceiling are off so access is unimpeded.

Total quote price is 3k incl GST.  Maybe I am out of touch, but I thought it would be much closer to 2k (or just over) for a unit of this size.

If it helps, last year I paid $3,300 incl. GST for the 7.1Kw Cora unit (FTXM71QVMZ) including wifi module to be supplied and fitted. This was installed in place of an existing unit and the installer also removed and disposed of the old unit.

Based on that your quote does seem a little on the high side for a much smaller unit.

Not sure where you're based but if Auckland I can pass on the details of the company I used by PM.

Yeah, it seems a tad high for the bedroom, but by the same token, a block wall is more work and wouldn't be back to back...neither would the wall mounting of the external unit.

We paid quite a bit for our Daikin, but they are pricier units compared to others on the market and we also had additional external conduit etc as we were quite specific about where the external unit went.

Just before xmas I paid $2400 for a 5.4Kw Fujitsu unit from oxygen air.  it would have been $1999 for a back to back install, but i wanted the outdoor unit quite a distance away.

EES quoted me for a panasonic around 5Kw for $3300.

EES where a lot cheaper when I got the ducted system put in last January ($8200ish for 8 vents and a 11KW system + wifi module), which was panasonic, but standalone units they dont have much and are a lot more expensive.

This is in auckland.

Huge variance, will have a look through the models people have stated.  The price of the unit when I asked was 1200 (didnt state with or without GST).  Which puts the install price at either $1610 if it excludes gst or $1800 if it includes it.

It may be a case of a company that normally deals in large systems prices to make a lot of profit to be worth there while on small jobs like you found Reven

check the price of the unit on pricespy etc as well.  My unit was around $1400 I think, which made the standard install of $1999 reasonable.

Do you really need wall mounted? I was in a wooden house with that setup once, the whole house vibrated. Brick might be different - could be better or worse.

I agree. Definitely place the outdoor unit on the ground. Unless the reason is due to it being above a driveway or somewhere similar where it might get damaged.

Such vibrations are also difficult to trace and stop. And can cause weird resonance type sounds in different parts of the house.

No chance of it getting damaged, there being an exposed drain, and then half raised garden, followed by higher raised garden. So it would need to be pretty small, and then also need to be placed on the ground further left than the indoor part (by 1.5m or so).

EES has put two units in for me, a 2.5KW and 3.5KW Panasonic. Had them installed about a year apart in different houses. They were $1500, and $1600, both mounted on the ground outside.

Neither needed new circuit breakers as they just patched them into an existing power socket by drilling from the power socket out through the wall.

Both times I was left horribly disappointed by EES though, tradies failed to show up on the days I took time off work to meet them, and on both occasions when they did finally show up they were not on time, once way late, the other way early. And the quality of the electrical job was also very poor - as if they didn't have the right tubing, piping, clamps etc and were rushed.

That price you were quoted sounds about in line in what Fujitsu and Mitsubishi's cost so seems reasonable to me given you also want it wall mounted.

Feels that way!

I have no issue with cost of the unit, its the install cost I have an issue with. Back to backs are generally $750 - this is twice that when in reality that is exactly what it is! When you say $1500 and $1600 is that the unit or the cost to have each of them installed (or both)? I did have a look at how much the mounting brackets cost because he made the point that they were "significantly more expensive" but NZ suppliers have them for less than $100 and have just plain L brackets for $52.  A new circuit breaker might be $30 + time.  $1600-$1800 just for the install seems excessive.

I will engage another outfit and see what they can offer, but maybe you are right and it is a fair amount for just installation.  Really the reason for me asking around.

Cheers

I wouldn't worry about that much distance - two of our outside units are around 5 and 10m from the indoor units with no degradation of performance.  I'd never get them wall mounted, too much risk of vibration - which you might not notice at first but could do later, especially at night.

We paid about $3.3k for a Mitsubishi 6.5w installed about 4 years ago. The unit was $2700 I think, so $600 for install. It was about a two-three hour job, pretty simple install.

Shop around, talk to the likes of 100% and Noel Leeming as they often do deals including installs.
