We currently live in an apartment, and as we all know, the rooms are small. My son is 14 but is already bigger than me. The problem I have now is that he is asking if there is a way to get some extra desk space in his room. This made me look into bunk beds where the bottom part is a desk. The ones I see on TradeMe mostly have a limit of 90KG for the bed part. My son is just below that. So was wondering if anyone can recommend a place that sells heavy duty ones or custom built?

There are some Loft beds From Robax in Invercargill that you can put your own desk under and they are made to Australasian standards and often used for adults.

how about this, looks like it's rated to 100kg+ and just has a gap where you can put whatever you want below it

(I imagine that these limits also have some safety margins built in so maybe you could get away with a 90kg one for a while if you son is below this currently?)

Will do some measurements once I get home as from memory there is a sprinkler just above his bed, so not sure if the ceiling is high enough or i would need to figure out a way to minimize the risk of him hitting it accidentally.

We have this for the kids, it will be disassembled into two king singles when they are older. (has sufficient width for the girlfriends too :D)

I can even sleep on the top with the older one, that is 105 + 25kg load.

It has very strong wooden frames.

ikea should be able to fix that.

When I lived in Brussels, I bought a hog slapper from my local ikea.

(Hog slapper was actually a hoog-slaaper or high-sleeper in Flemish)

When I lived in Germany, I built one for the two (big) kids. Easy enough construction.

Perhaps a local ikea importer can help you or perhaps a local chippie could knock one up from a photo if you cannot make it yourself.

I just did some measurements and I feel that the Robax is too high as the ceiling height is 240 and the bed is 178. Any other suggestions for something lower?

Where are you? If you’re near Auckland, a couple of years ago we saw some nice-looking ones at the Home Ideas Centre in Parnell - may have been the Hiddenbed ones shown adove.

I wouldn’t feel comfortable sleeping on a slapper.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Any decently-built ones are going to be outrageously expensive. Even then, you're often looking at 40-50mm posts with 15-20mm cross-boards dowelled in, and that's all. We got one with marginally more solid posts (65mm) and crappy dowelling with barely any glue used, you could pull them apart with your hands, which I replaced with more solid dowels with construction adhesive, metal pins through the boards, and angle brackets above and below each board into the end posts. Oh, and I used two packers to screw the top part of the frame into wall joists. That's now reasonably solid, and will take an adult without moving/wobbling.

So you can get a reasonably solid loft bed (not technically a bunk bed, if there's a desk underneath it's a loft bed), you just have to do a bit of DIY to get the "solid" part.

Maybe too simple - but if the Robax is too high, get someone to cut 50 or 100 mm off the bottom of each leg.

That is one option I am considering. I have asked quotes from custom builders, so will see what would be a cheaper option.

Hey - if you're in the Auckland area, I think I can do a competent job of cutting down 4 legs for you.

Classic 5 minute job !

I'm assuming that the bed will come as an assemble-it-yourself kitset.
So just figure out how much you want to remove from the legs and bring them round.

Before assembly, clearly.
