Soon will move to the new development area (near Wallaceville train station) at Wallaceville. By chance read the post at

https://www.facebook.com/197331234371742/posts/warning-wallaceville-land-contamination-fraud-threat-of-biologicalchemicalradioa/229148407856691/

It mentioned contamination of
Wallaceville, former Ag research, Private Plan Change 40, (PC40) Upper Hutt. I'm wondering how bad is it? Is it a urban legend or some undercover truth?

Reading that post hurt my head.. it just absolutely screams "paranoid nutjob" to me.

Random, I was just searching for something on an unrelated property and came across one of the Contamination reports.  Go back to Geekzone and see this thread!

Haven't had a chance to read the info, but the 'contamination' in that area is definitely something most people in Upper Hutt have heard rumours of.  I remember hearing a fair bit from my dad when I was a kid (30+ years ago), through to more recent times.  There's probably just as many (if not more) rumours about the developers.  They seem to own half of Upper Hutt, have quite a bit of influence, etc.  Along with that comes tales of dodgy deals and tactics.  Or at least the perception of it.

Personally, I wouldn't live there even if it was safe.  I own a house over the other side of the railway lines with a decent size section and better access to everything.

A local real estate agent told my wife he thinks the whole development is going to turn into a big rental dumping ground.  But then when do you believe anything a REA says...

Many urban areas were once farmland , some urban areas were once used as unofficial dumps
So god knows whats under & in the soil, everywhere

cadmium contamination from superphosphate .
Dioxin & other nasties from commonly used sprays back then
lead in much of our soils , from when that was widely used in paint, petrol etc
unrecorded asbestos dump sites (as per recent discoveries in Sth Ak)

We've all been living with this , all our lives. So actual risk may be near zero

If in doubt, get some deep soil samples and get that tested . Could take many years for the nasties to start
leaching up to the fresh topsoil though
