I live next door to a rental.

 

In general the tenants have been awesome. They have moved out and the house is being done up for sale.

 

The landlord however has been a huge problem. He has cost me not insignificant money with council consents (which I got).

 

So I am half interested in costing him some money.

 

What can I do to be a terrible neighbour (but legal) that will cost him with either a lower offer or cause him to miss out.

 

Some ideas:

 

  • Play let it go on repeat while there are open homes
  • have my charcoal bbq spewing stinky white smoke
  • Sit outside in boxers drinking beers performing the above
  • cease mowing lawns
  • High intensity fairy lights outside their lounge
  • Pile garden debris against shared fence

So - what red flags would a neighbour show that would make you walk away or lower your offer?

 

Legal, kinda funny, and I may have to live next door to these people so not too embarrassing :P

Yep, act like trash when prospective buyers turn up next door for a looksee....

 


Then you'll only get trash moving in next door. Because good decent people wont want to live there

Tinfoil your windows

 

Add a few extractor fans and vent tubes

 

empty 'chemical' bottles lying around

 

Dump a bottle of bleach near the boundary prior to the open home.

In a previous property I've had similar, and that's why the half kidding.

 

Honestly It makes my blood boil when I think about how much time and money this gentleman has cost me - especially when I got to do everything as originally planned - no modifications at all.

 

So a little bit of frustration on his part would soothe the angry soul.

I do have 4 kids under 10, and a few neighbourhood mates. This I could do. I forget how intrusive noisy kids can be :)

Can you reply in kind with requiring him to spend money on council consent for the work he is undertaking in "doing up for sale"?

 

That would be the most satisfying form of revenge in my opinion.

But in all seriousness, You clearly want this guy gone as the owner, so just let him sell the house,

 

 

 

Yes it will grind your gears, but causing a sale to fall through will just mean that he's your neighbour even longer....

Unfortunately it's largely cosmetic - cleaning up the garden, some painting, carpet etc.

 

He is replacing the kitchen - I wonder if that's consented...…..Do the council follow up on calls about issues like that?

I was thinking about making an offer, stringing him along and pulling out at the last minute.

 

Definitely want him gone - this thread is providing some of the venting that actual action might provide :)

Doesn't have to be a dog barking in-person (or in-dog?) - just make sure there are visible indicators of you having a dog, and during open homes play a recording of a dog barking non-stop.

 

(We have neighbours whose dog can bark constantly for hours - there aren't many things more annoying, apart from perhaps our other neighbours who feel it's ok to party all night, and stand out on the street yelling at 2am.)

 

But, seriously, I agree that it's in your best interests to get the house sold; the quicker that happens the quicker you can put all of this behind you...

So after thinking it through - a move which may be challenging, but still attract people I might like.

 

All of our kids, and at least a friend each in the backyard, going hell for leather.

 

Not truly horrible, but certainly frustrating.

 

It will also appeal to people like me that have a large family and want a family friendly neighbourhood. 

 

Seems like a win win lose(ish)

Don't do anything. If he can't get a good enough offer, he won't sell and will continue to be a problem.
