I currently have a cheap Ozito drill and have been doing the odd job on the house where I've found the need for a 13mm chuck. I'm thinking it's time to invest in a decent quality drill that I would hope sees me through a decade.

I've done a bit of research, and I'm steering away from the Ryobi end and I'm keen on a metal chuck and gearing. I'm not a tradie, but tend to buy at the mid to high tier on the premise that it will last longer and make life easier. I'm happy at the 500 point for a two piece kit with decent batteries, but can also stretch if the value is there.

What's a decent drill option that's going to last me a decent period of time?

I like my Bosch for diy type work, not sure it has the large chuck you need. Buy into the system you want.

I started with 18v lithium Black and decker and was happy (driver and drill), then got a Stanley combo the same with 4AH and 2AH batteries. I was happy with the upgrade.

Recently bought a 3 piece Dewalt kit with driver, hammer drill and angle grinder and 2x6AH 18/54V batteries. (about $780 including the second battery on special) and they kick the Stanley into the weeds.

In fact the angle grinder is so good I saw it on special by itself next week so picked up a second grinder - you ALWAYS need 2 grinders.

If you're looking at the 500+ maybe a bit area, I would wait for a dewalt kit to come on special.

I've had a good run with AEG (which is the same techtronic manufacturer as Ryobi, but a step up). Its branded Rigid in the states if you're looking at AvE's BOLTRs or other reviews.

I seldom use a 13mm bit though. Depending on what you're doing, a holesaw or forstner bit, or possible even a reduced shank bit might be more helpful.

Also got 3 piece Dewalt kit with driver DCF887, hammer drill DCD996 and angle grinder DCG406, absolutely love it. Picked it up for $500 on one of their Black Friday specials including charger and single 6AH 'flexvolt' battery. I find I use the driver more than the drill (at the moment anyway). Grinder is fantastic too. Great with a sanding disk on it.

I also find Bunnings is consistently cheaper (by a reasonable amount) than Mitre10, so visit Mitre10, and get them to price beat, get another 15% off and pay with airpoints.

Bought a DeWalt twin pack when I started my home Reno two years ago - DCD895 drill + DCF885 impact driver, each with 3AH batteries and have been so pleased with both.

Was only $498 from itools online.

To a post above - Am pretty sure DeWalt and Stanley brands come from the same company, so probably not much between them :)

There's a great YouTube channel AVE, the guy takes them all apart down to the gears and reviews them - worth a look!

I am trying to find a video but cant - someone was working on a tv transmission tower a few days ago in the USA. They dropped the drill and it fell through a walkway shelter 20 metres below with a corrugated iron roof - creating a nice hole in it and landed on the concrete path below. They picked it up and it still worked.

I cant find the video because the title was something like "always wear your helmets boys" but i cant remember the exact wording.

I wouldn't write off Ryobi too quickly. I have been comparing a friend's Ryobi drill and impact driver with my own Dewalt set. The impact driver somehow seems to drive long square drive screws without as much camming out using the same drive bits. The drill chuck doesn't hold small bits as well but I have been using it to auger 25mm holes in timber without any problem. The sets were about the same price 4 years ago but while I just got 1.5AH batteries, the Ryobi set had 1x2AH & 1x5AH batteries. He has been using them commercially along with an 18 ga pinner and 165mm saw both a lot cheaper than alternatives and they've held up.

Quite interesting but a lot of speculation about likely performance. I'd like to see teardowns of faulty tools to show what did fail.

Stanley Black & Decker is the Corporation that makes various brands including Dewalt. Other brands from the past like Elu have been absorbed.

+1 for Milwaukee.

I had a combination of Makita, Dewalt and Milwaukee , changed everything to Milwaukee.

Also with the amount of drillbits available for the impact driver these days I find I hardly use the drill , the speedbits ( auger) just fly through studs .
Unfortunately we are totally ripped off here , the pic above is an example what you can get in the US, I drool every time I going to Home Depot -;)

Honestly, unless you're doing a lot of stuff, the Ozito's are fine. I've got the Brushless Impact & Drill set, no issues at all. Unless you're using this thing daily to earn your bread and butter, you shouldn't have issues, and if you do the Ozito warranty is hard to go past, because Bunnings will just swap it.

i too went the Milwaukee eco system route and couldn’t be happier. I have the drill, driver and jigsaw and all are great

That's a lower tier dewalt (half the price of what I got), and trying to run the motors while stalled? Not surprised the magic smoke started to come out. I'm not sure that test really provides much useful data.
