Hi there, need to purchase a new washing machine. Narrowed it down to 2 machines - Bosch 9kg front loader WAW28640AU or AEG 8kg front loader LF6E8431A - both from Harvey Norman. I know Bosch is usually really reliable (and we've been more than happy with our previous Bosch front loader), but does anyone own an AEG and recommend them? Does anyone have the 9kg Bosch i-DOS machine? Any advise would be appreciated.

Neither. Miele as seen as one of the top brands. I would suggest checking consumer to see what they have tested, and their brand reliability charts.

Consumer recommends Miele and LG as the top washing machine brands, although based on experience I tend to take their advice with a pinch of salt. We recently bought a new fridge and I really wanted the LG one as it was considerably larger, but the store owner steered me away. She said to me, and I don't know if it is true or not, that they don't do a good job of keeping parts around long term so if if breaks in say 5 years you might be up for an entire new appliance rather than just a few parts. Not sure if that applies to LG's washing machines though.

And just in case you haven't had a front loader before - they take considerably longer than a top load, if time to wash is a consideration then it might be worth reconsidering.

As above Miele. We have their Twin-DOS model washing machine and matching heat pump dryer. Very happy with both.

If you are considering the AEG, also have a look at the Electrolux.

We brought our first front loader this time last year, and liked the LG & AEG 9 & 8 KG respectively. When we investigated a bit further we found the Electrolux had a lot of the same features as the AEG, but for a lot less.

AEG is Electrolux, so presumably they're the luxury-market-priced version of a similar good.

We have a 8 year old Bosch that looks very similar to that one so assume it was the 9kg variant at the time.

It still washes our clothes and never had a problem with it.

I signed up for 30 days subscription to which.co.uk which is Consumer NZ version. Our Consumer NZ version is quite outdated when it comes to kitchen appliance models. After going through which.co.uk to see which appliances to purchase when it came to the induction cooktop, the AEG was rated right up there but in NZ you do not get that model under AEG instead it comes under Electrolux which was neb mentioned we managed to get a really good price.

Do whatever you want to do man.

As stated, AEG and Electrolux are one in the same, AEG is priced at a premium, but the differences really are small. I would normally recommend the Bosch as they make great washing machines BUT the i-DOS has been hugely problematic for my mother-in-law as well as a relative of a friend. Even though the friend worked in the whitegoods industry he couldn't get a reasonable response out of Bosch for the issues. One thing I would recommend if you do go with the Bosch i-DOS is that you do NOT use fabric softner, that will cause massive issues in my experience.

Like many others have said, LG (and another Korean appliance manufacturer) aren't well known for keeping suitable levels of spare parts. I do have one of their fridge/freezers and it has been faultless for over 7 years.

Miele on the other hand, make fantastic washing machines. I have the TwinDos and the system is excellent with no powder marks, great cleaning capabilities and it's super quiet too. Highly recommended. We have a Miele dryer, but if we had our chance again we'd jump on a heatpump version as we use it a lot... due to our apartment living situation.

We had the local appliance repair company deliver us some goods the other day from Harvey Norman and I asked him which is the brand that they see come back most often that falls outside of the norm and he straight away said Samsung fridges. They tend to get a lot of Samsung fridges back for repairs compared to other brands outside of the norm of every brand will have some sort of product failure rate than usual.

We had a 6.5kg Bosch for 5-6 years (made in Thailand), and it was noisy and fell apart. When I scrapped I found one of the concrete weights had come unbolted.

I checked Consumer and decided on an 8kg LG, but got talked into a similar spec Beko, considerably cheaper, 5 year warranty, and seems to do the job well.

My parents do have a miele, and their one has a 30 minute quickwash feature. I don't think their one takes as long as their old one in a normal cycle either. Previously they had an asko, which took a long time to do a cycle, and it lasted them 20 years, and their only got rid of it because it was too small.

One thing to be aware of though with top loaders, especailly the larger ones, is that because they can spin very fast, you need to have it on a strong floor, otherwise it can cause a lot of vibration. Preferably have it on a concrete floor.

We had a parmco die about a year ago. Do not buy Parmco.

Wanted Miele but as this was an unbudgeted expense couldn't do it. We got it for $1k, rather than $1,200.

It's amazing. Beats the living *!@# out of a twice the price Parmco unit from 4 years before. Quiet and reasonably fast. Even the quick wash actually works, which didn't at all on the Parmco!

So - not what you asked for, but if you want a cheaper option we do 10 loads of washing a week, it's been going for a year and it's great.
