Because life is awesome my in wall oven has had the bottom element die. I started to look at repair, but the oven itself is in very poor condition, so it's probably not economic from a lifespan perspective.

My wife and I have had a look, and we're super keen on a double unit, but OMG Money! The one she wants is about $4.5k from harvey norman.

So we are thinking about a compromise for the moment, buy cheap now and put it on the list for a couple of years. So that means we want to go real cheap :)

Options for cheap units are:

That Electrolux unit has had seals, hinges and a computer board replaced.
How old is it and what will break next?

I know a couple of people that had smeg ovens and they both had issues with them. Others may think differently, but i dont think they are that great quality-wise.

I see your thinking regarding second hand, but I reckon I would go with the new unit.
At least there is a warranty and the consumer guarantee act to cover it for quite a while.

Not wall ovens, but we have recently had to purchase a few secondhand standup ovens for rental properties for various (tenant) reasons.

I would be weary of buying secondhand again, from elements not working, seals not working, doors not closing properly - it is not an easy 5 minute job to pickup and install a secondhand oven and it sucks even more when that oven doesn't work for some reason.

The challange is you ask about any brand and at least someone has had a bad experience.

I've had bad experiences with F&P in the past, so am reluctant to consider thier units, especially second hand. Whereas electrolux I've generally had a good time with. No experience with smeg other than a gas cooktop and thats not really relevant.

It only needs to last 2 - 3 years, so I'm thinking about giving it a go. Most of us have had ovens for 10 years + right I figure that reasonable - especially as that smeg is only 4 years old. Not sure about the electrolux but I really like the idea of two full size ovens a lot!

I've recently been through this exercise - my Ariston wall oven gave up the ghost for the second time recently. Last time it broke down, it was at the repairer for 5 months(!) waiting for parts from overseas, and it cost circa $500 to repair.

When it stopped working again a few weeks ago with a different issue I couldn't face cooking on a benchtop oven for yet another 5 months.

I ended up buying a very nice runout model Electrolux pyrolytic from Harvey Norman after having a long exchange with the sales guy. Initially I was leaning towards a Fisher & Paykel until I found out the cheaper ones are all made in Turkey. In fact the cheaper models for most brands seem to be made in less desirable locations.

My Electrolux model was made in Australia which gives me some comfort should I require parts in future, and of course the 2 year warranty and CGA were also a consideration. It appears to be very well made with quintuple glazing on the door (I didn't know that was even a thing!), 5 minute warm up to 200deg, and a host of other handy features.

I spent $2k - I couldn't justify any more than that as the rest of my kitchen is not that flash lol. From what I can tell, the original RRP was over $3k.

I have Vogue oven and dishwasher , which were in my new house which I purchased over 4 years ago.

Thought I would be replacing them soon after purchase, but they both been great - no problems at all.

In fact I would now happily buy Vogue, from Trade Depot - if I ever need to replace these.

Manufacturer warranty (eg 24 months on the Vogue you linked to) plus the CGA coverage relevant to a new oven makes it a no-brainer, I reckon.

A s/h unit is surely more likely to break down, yet your ability to require the seller to fix the problem is far reduced compared to a new unit (six months warranty on one of those I noted).

Ok, I hear you.
Seals and elements are a pain, as is uneven heating, all of which I can deal with if it's new.

I had a chat to the guy at Harvey Norman and while the ovens seem great, a very unexpected expense so 2k + install etc is out of my range.
Thanks for the feedback on vogue, great to hear. The only thing I might not like is the little oven doesn't have a fan, but I think I can deal with that 👍

My experience in buying second hand is that much more likely than not the item is in very average condition.

Once in a while you get a gem, but that's a rarity.

Hasn't stopped me buying secondhand though! Just make sure you expect is to be in a rubbish condition no matter what is on the description and no matter how good the photos look, and the price it accordingly, and then take your chances.

Ok, there are 1 million ovens to buy :(

There are some great deals at the noel leeming clearance centre for 1 & 1/2 ovens, electrolux, pyrolitic and everything for 2.5k. Unfortunately outside the old budget.

Trade tested it is - $799 cheapie FTW

Our appliances are around 12 years old... just had to buy a new bosch oven seal, and they delivered it within 2 days, for a 12 yr old oven.

A few months ago the inner glass on the 12 yr old bosch microwave exploded (food particles can get lodged around the edges of the glass and it gets superheated and causes the glass to fail) - they also delivered that in a couple of days.

Out of curiosity, I checked the availability of other parts for our bosch, and the ones i checked all seem to be in stock.

F&P are good too, had to replace an ice bin for our 12-year-old fridge, and they happily supplied that.

I had a smeg, it died, i hated it.

I then bought a Parmco from appliance shed. it was complete rubbish, gave it away for free on facebook

Bought a second hand fisher and pykel that was 1 year old (lady was replacing the one that came with a new house). got it for $200. which is a steal. my old house had the same oven just in the 1.5 model.

so yeah I'd buy a second hand oven depending on the condition/brand.

The condition thing is what started to make it hard. On Trademe it's basically impossible to tell unless you go and have a look, and they've often been removed.

We're a family of 6, and even after 3/4 days we're starting to suffer a bit. So yeah - right now cheap, cheap cheap but new and if it does me 2 - 3 years and then we can get a good one that might be the go.
