Got my filter renewed in my three bedroom house a few days ago. Serviceman took readings of the airflow, and wrote them down on checksheet. The he went into the ceiling cavity. Came down with a filter cartridge - showed it to me. It was black on one side and whitish on the other. Usual result, as per other filter changes. The I was advised that the electric motor was running slow and needed to be replaced. He wished to that then and there as he had a spare motor in his vehicle.

I said no, the unit was running OK but that I would think about what he reported. He prepared an offer "deal"/agreement that indicated he could do the replacement job for $1799. That seems too high to me. I was not with the serviceman when he checked the airflows. And, it just seemed too convenient that there was a spare motor in his vehicle. All in all I was quite uncomfortable about what happened.

Does anyone know how much the required motor (to required specs) plus installation should cost. And, is it possible that the motor can be renovated for a much cheaper cost. And, can anyone (preferably a registered electrician) install a new motor for me instead of an HRV serviceman.

All comments welcome.

I agree that seems incredibly convenient and with all the stuff I've heard about with HRV and their dodgy sales tactics, nothing would surprise me. Having said that, perhaps you do have a fault, but I'd be surprised if it couldn't be repaired or reconditioned for far cheaper than that.

As far as I know however, it's a propriertary system and unlikely you could go onto the open market and find a replacement that wasn't HRV branded.

If I were me, I'd probably ask them to send a second, experienced installer around to assess it, and if possible get up there with them to verify. Would be interesting to see what numbers the prior installer recorded.

Alternatively, query it with head office and ask for other options other than spending $1800.

How old is it? $1800 just for a fan motor?

I recently paid $296 for a replacement fan for my old Drivaire system. Total bill with some labour, a bit of customisation to run the fan half speed, a couple of diffusers, some ducting, a filter, and fitting. Note, no fancy electronics or control systems, I have it on a Kasa Wifi timer so it's running when I want it to. Total bill $900.

Sounds like a typical HRV proprietary sales grab.  How old is it?  Claim CGA?

Thanks for those replies. Good comments and ideas.

Interesting answer that points to the motor on Trademe. Shall follow that up.

System is about 2002 vintage I think.

Any more comments welcome.

2002 takes it outside the CGA in my opinion.

18 Years, you could realistically be having an issue. Worth at least double-checking.

If I could get a TM motor for $300, and I could get a motor from the manufacturer for $500 I'd stump the extra $200.

For $1800, I can definitely see myself looking for non supported options.

Do you see any condensation in the house? If yes, look at the one from Trademe and replace yourself. If no, leave it be.

If you put your hand by the vent is there airflow? if yes leave it be, if no see above.

We had ours whole system installed for about $2500 by them, $1800 sounds like a rip off just to replace the motor.

You could see if this company will sell you the fan motor.

Supercell.co.nz

Sell parts and filters compatible with many ventilation systems including HRV.  DIY filter replacement for a fraction of the cost.

Thanks to all for great responses.

I have organised for the motor that Jase "pointed" me to to be installed. Purchased for $320. Removal of old unit, installation of new unit plus testing as to performance etc will cost me $160. That's so much better than the HRV offered price to do the same job.

I'm happy as!!

What about the level 4 shutdown? Would this be an essential service?

We live in strange and troubled times.

But, yes, what a huge price diff. HRV=ripoff.

Yes, Lindsay. Know there will now be a wait until the end of the "lockdown". Have communicated with seller of motor and we both agreed to wait for installation. So, all is well.
