1.2m gap between house and fence. Attached a lightweight garden gate to the existing fencepost. Planned on installing another post to latch the gate onto. Was also going to fix some rails to the post and nail 2 palings to it and close off the gap entirely. Wanted to avoid drilling into house exterior (stucco).

Turns out there is also a wastewater pipe between the house and fence. Found the top of the clay pipe when I scraped the topsoil off. Can't go any closer to the fence unless I want a tiny 500 wide gate. Can't go any closer to the house because there is another lateral.

So now I'm stuck with a gate swinging free in the wind, with nothing to latch it onto.

My options appear to be a. fix a length of timber to the wall then fix the gate onto that, or b. fix a length of timber to the wall and another horizontally between it and the existing fencepost, and using it as a "framework", hang some skinny posts off it to close the gate.

Main concern is drilling into house exterior because there are plenty of warning posts about ruining the waterproofing if not done properly. But also the damn gate is already there, would be good if I could come up with some other way to use it and seal off the gap at the same time.

Install a gatepost offset to the gate and use horizontal members to support a floating gatepost where you want it.

Cover the horizontals with trellis etc. Viola.

A spring on one side, and a string on the other and go latchless? A gas strut? Self closer with limit strap? Bond a lightweight member to the stucco?

How much traffic is going through the gate ? Daily or once in a blue moon?

If it’s used often , as someone said above , glue a light member on to the side of the house and use that, if it’s not very heavily used you could pour a small concrete nib and fasten the gate at the bottom...

Change the gate to 1.2m wide? Hang a second gate on the house and latch the 2 gates together?

A sketch/plan would be helpful to visualize the problem.

Hard to know whats possible without a picture but you could attach a spring bolt latch to the fence that goes through or into something attached on the gate.  So the gate will stay closed but is controlled by said latch.

You would need the latch to be a tight fit to stop the gate moving.

I'll take a guess your gate is 900 giving you 300-500 between house and gate to fit a post and fill the gap.

Dead set on keeping the line? Support the remaining section on feet straddling the pipe to four footings. Top view similar to 'H'. Depends how deep that pipe is if you can bury the legs h4 unseen.

Else, set the gate back from the main fence to avoid the pipe. Top view similar to L.

Alternatively set the post and remaining fence whereever you can to avoid the pipe and lose any straight line. Last option is not pretty.
