Hello everyone, As we are moving out of Alert Level 4, I start looking for a hand lawnmower for my small, flat lawns. In the previous thread, there is a discussion around masport cleveland 18. I’m also quite interested in Gardena’s products (https://www.gardena.com/int/products/lawn-care/cylinder-lawnmowers/) But I don’t know if they are available in New Zealand. Does anyone have any other suggestion? Thanks.

I have had a Flymo H40 for about a decade - works well for smaller sections and well maintained grass.  Really struggles with longer tougher grass (e.g. when you have been away on summer holiday for a few weeks).  My one is starting to show its age and isn't running as smoothly as it was.

Having a small section, I found the masport hand mover a pain. I ended up with a flymo, which I much prefer.

If you are wanting a push mower I recommend you look to a second hand mower. Newer ones are typically not a (grass) patch on the old mowers, which were built to a totally different standard.

You could look at buying an ok one from TM or similar and getting it set and sharpened at a decent mower shop, or see if such a shop has any for sale.

Thank you all for helpful advice! I appreciate it.

@fearandloathing, I'm thinking about Flymo H40. Would you mind sharing why you think that Masport is a pain for the small lawn? Is it too heavy and bulky?

@jonathan18, it seems not easy to get decent hand mower at Level 3. Hope that we can move to Level 2 soon.

I much prefer the Flymo TH350, I wouldn't want it on a big lawn.

Hand Mower:

As the wheels are large and the blade is inside the wheels, It's harder to cut underthings as you are restricted by the height of the wheels.

When the grass is long it won't cut.

Long grass fills the basket very quickly as there is no mulching, more emptying of the grass catcher.

When the grass is wet it won't cut.

There is no weight in the mower, so the lawn gets longer over time.

Hard to sharpen.

Cant mow over the edge of a curb (Gutter on-road)

Flymo TH350:

Longer grass takes several passes.

There is no weight in the mower, so the lawn gets longer over time, although not as bad as the hand mower.

As there is no catcher sometimes there is more of cleanup on paths etc.

Need long extension cord.

Either choice requires a tidy-up with a weed eater, you may or may not get this with any mower.

Thank you for the comparison, @fearandloathing.
Originally I'm committed to a hand mower (the area of my lawn is about 200 square meters. Tall fescue is the grass used). Now I am swayed.
A quick question: I couldn't find TH350. Do you mean TL 350 (https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/flymo-hover-electric-hovermower-1400-watt/p/124136?gclid=CjwKCAjwqJ_1BRBZEiwAv73uwLRtvANkSE-OYLVbFS0IRehn3WXureYQ1xHqItHQW3H1RMdtKxUhMBoCb_UQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)?

I was in the market for a mower recently and bidding got heated over the weekend. I think this was due to the fact that all auctions were extended by default by TM and they were ending on the same day, getting more exposure than the typical week etc..

Ended up with a masport president at a premium cost... was a lot older than I thought (checked with Masport NZ) but it seriously looked solid and probably was, when Masport were still NZ made.

Look forward to picking it up later this week...
