A number of doors in our house, due to age are having some annoying issues we want to be resolved. Some of them are long-standing issues, others are fairly new.

1) Most of the door handles open/close mechanism have become "rough", they seem like they are "grinding" and are very loud. Could be a case of lubrication, but I am wondering how long these mechanisms last and if we may need to replace either the mechanism completely, or better to consider replacing the entire door. They are lightweight construction so possibly reasonably cost-effective to replace entirely. I suspect that may mean replacing the wood on the jam? If it's lubrication is CRC the stuff? Is it straight forward to get lubricant where it needs to go, any tips would be appreciated.

2) The entrance to our lounge is 2 doors which close in the middle. They both close using a roller mechanism and since day one, if there is a draft in the house, they rattle. I have reached breaking point as the ratting is driving me insane and I want to know how I can get a better mechanism and who I would hire to do this and potentially look at the issues? I assume builder? Anyone got any ideas on a better mechanism please?

This is what's on the top of the door:

This is the fitting in the jamb

Thanks!

That roller mech is adjustable. Press the roller in and then turn to increase/decrease spring tension on it.

I have 4 of those stupid style doors with the pressure roller on top.  After years of putting up with them rattling and blowing open.  Or being a pain in the arse to close I ripped apart some hard drives, screwed the magnets onto the doors and some angle iron on the frame and have never been happier.  They open and close perfectly well, no getting stuck, they dont blow open, they dont rattle in the wind anymore!  Mine are to the laundry and hot water cupboard so it might not be the nicest look in a well travelled area.

Would it be too much trouble to get a photo so I can see?

Heres some images of it.  Its not pretty but it is functional.  If I could have been bothered at the time I would have done a nicer job!

I found with my rollers they just were no longer adjustable to any great degree, they were either too hard which made the doors impossible to close or too soft and they just blew open.

Ah, that makes more sense now that I can see it. It's probably not a DIY thing for me, I lack the skill to even put what you have done together, but it gives me another idea.

Do you know if a commercial version of that is available or what it would be called? Alternatively is there a name of the style of doors I have (2 doors, joined in the middle, opening inward, that I could look for mechanisms for?

Edit:

Wondering if something like this would be effective for the lounge?

No idea about a commercial version.  Those magnetic latches you posted are probably not overly strong, might do the trick though!

For lock lubricant I've used this.
https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/crc-lock-and-hinge-210ml-clear/p/181576

I had a door lock that was rough after turning key beyond 45degrees. Quick spray with this made it smooth as butter.

A good builder or handyperson could sort this out for you, but it needs to be good one - which isn't a given unless you have a recommendation.

I'd try a locksmith - they are kind of overkill for the task but would get those doors going perfect for you and have good ideas for alternatives for that latch.

Fitting door handles is an easy diy task, getting them perfect is not

The hidden ones blackjack17 posted are good IME. Really easy to install. You just need a drill and a 22mm bit. Pretty good instructions here.

It's worth trying to CRC the existing door handles. Depending on how they are fitted there may be screws, a screw thread or a hidden catch in the handle to get one side off (only one side). Give it a squirt of your chosen libation and reassemble.

I found this:

which looks exactly what I am after. I just need to find something strong enough to hold the full sized door in place with a gust of wind, but not so strong it becomes annoying to open.

I assume

https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/handee-magnetic-cupboard-catch-heavy-duty-white/p/220228?gclid=Cj0KCQjwhIP6BRCMARIsALu9Lfn0F6avuV9xBFRbabgdvoJ1SII08v50liFeOWbpGLsefbRazU9K9swaAmXlEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Isn't strong enough?

I think I prefer that to the ones @blakjak posted above, as I am unsure how fiddly those ones will be to install if it has to be installed without removing the door? Obviously, I think blakjak's solution is less "visible", correct?

Whoops, I didn't see what @mdf posted, that makes more sense now. Will 1 set (only at the top) hold the door in place securely, or is a second lot-required at the bottom (floor?) I assume just the one at the top should be enough...

Why not get door magnets instead? You can get some very strong ones, and you can also put two on a door if you need a very strong one.  They have effectively replaced roller type latches, as they don't have any moving parts.

If you want to get your graunching locks etc serviced, I can absolutely recommend these guys. Have used them a couple of times and have successfully recommended to several friends. They are really good to deal with - and they will probably install magnetic catches for you too if you wish.
