Hi all,

First time poster here so hopefully this subject hasn’t been flogged to death prev’.
I have a new deck awning being fabricated at the moment from Aluminium and am stuck with choosing the roof panel type. We have opted for the Custom Glaze polycarbonate panels but can’t decide on if we go with the Clear panels or the Grey tint. Concerns are the clear being too hot (deck is S/E facing so morning sun mostly) and Grey tint although being cooler but being too dark? Anyone here have experience with the Custom Glaze on their installations and thoughts on the choice?

Cheers, Tony

My inlaws had their grey panels smashed by hail and they replaced with clear, they regret that decision as it now gets way to hot in summer.

Go with the grey.

There are cheap grey tint window films they could buy and apply to the clear panels, assuming the increased surface heat wouldn't melt the plastic.

@tkman What did you go for in the end? And what are your thoughts a month later?
We are going through the exact process now and the installer has recommended the grey tint but we are concerned that it could block too much light into the adjoining rooms.

Hi, we went with the Custom Glaze Grey tint in the end and pretty happy with the decision. It is slightly darker on the adjoining room but the heat reduction positives far outweighs the negatives on that front so recommended if your planning on using it at any time with the sun beating down. Good luck!

I don't know about the Custom Glaze specifically but having seen clear next to grey tint I'd definitely go for the tint, the clear will allow the area underneath to get insanely hot on a sunny day. You don't really notice the tint after awhile, and it makes a significant difference in heat/glare.

If you can afford it, consider louvres. We're putting those in because with polycarbonate or acrylic vs. standard long-run steel it's either too dark in winter or too bright in summer, while with louvres you can set them as required for the time of the year.

Planning for this at the moment. Leaning towards the louvers if the price is manageable.

What are you being quoted?

I see these trade tested have an aluminum pergola, with louvers at $2999 for 3mx4m.

This would be close to what we are after.

Anyone had experience of these?

Cheers

Not sure my case will be translatable to anything else, firstly we're coastal so I'm willing to pay a bit more for solid weathertightness, and secondly since it's part of the Casa de Cowboy rebuild most of it will be wood-framed and only the louvres and surround will be supplied, and that's just a drop-in for the wood framing. We're likely going with Louvretec for the simple reason that they have very detailed technical docs available, unlike pretty much everyone else, and I could show them to the builder and he could say "yeah, no problem, we'll do it this way".
