Hi everyone

Please don't take this as a dig about this forum.

I am wondering why the DIY area is so popular, is it that you ask questions on here because you want a second opinion or is it that the information you are looking for is just not easily assessable on the web?

I would think a bit of both.  Sometimes you have half an idea but you don't really know where to start looking.  Sometimes you think you have a whole idea but you want a second (third, fourth, fifth) pair of eyes to look at it from another angle to pick up the "obvious" flaw you missed in your excitement.

And in some cases, it's sharing something you've achieved with others who have a similar mindset.  Many cases of people getting ideas from this forum and doing the same, or variations of for themselves.

The reason I love this place so much is no matter what the subject someone on here has already researched it to the nth degree and I can pick through the threads in the comfort of my own home and know that as "geeks" everyone with a comment will have a valid comment, whether positive or negative.

As for the DIY forum, I also have a great appreciation of people who can do things with their hands I can only dream of.

Probably also that searching for answers to DIY problems on line, even if you limit search results to *.nz domains still leads to results from overseas, and/or a lot of BS shill "disadvermation" (is that even a word?).

Or worse - the search will find only Youtube "step by step how to" videos shot on a VGA webcam in 2002 by a drunk from Alabama with a slow drawl and a serious stammer.

Good sense check. Also opens your mind to others views of solving the problem. Don't underestimate team work.

I like reading through them as I feel that most users on here have done their research and have real-world experience of the thing they are DIYing (and there are some genuine experts/professionals as well).

In short, I trust the advice here more than other forums.

Same goes for tech advice/what-to-buy questions as well.

No, but close. You're thinking of "misinfertising".
