Hello,

We are thinking about getting our carpet replaced and wanting to start the process of getting people around to talk about the options etc, so keen to hear if any of you fine folk have any recommendations or stories of horror to warn me off certain things/companies/etc

It depends on the carpet. Some carpets are very difficult to lay, especially wool patterned ones, and thick wool; ones. Many carpet layers seem to be used to installing synthetic carpets these days, which seem to be easier to lay. We have just had some new wool carpet laid and it wasn't a good job. We had to complain and point out the problems with the install to the manager, to get someone back who was experienced, before it was done how it should have been done initially. This includes aligning the pattern in the carpet at the joins, so they mesh together properly, and so there aren't any gaps. especially important with looped carpet. Also make sure they put the smooth edge close enough to the skirting, as otherwise sit can pull out over time. Make sure you get their best layers to do the job, there seem to be a lot that aren't good, but that seems to be the problem a the moment in the building trade, a lack of good experienced staff. Also expect damage to skirting and edges, and find out who pays to put that damage right.

On a related note, can anyone recommend a carpet layer, preferably on the north shore? As per an earlier discussion on here about workshop floors we're doing most of the basement in 1m carpet tiles, specifically these things (they're a lot lighter than that photo indicates) which are nice and big (so less to lay) and pretty good value for money. Due to time and work constraints I'd prefer to hand the task off to someone else rather than attempt it myself...

Carpet laying isn't really a DIY job IMO anyway. Can be very hard on the knees etc. I would suggest contacting a few carpet companies and asking who their best layers are. They are often older due to experience. Also in terms of a retailer, I previously got quotes from some of these chains, vs an independent, and the indepandent company was a lot cheaper for the same brand and type of carpet. It pays to shop around.
