Hey all

Can anyone clear up the wiring for a PDL29?

There are four pins, with two marked as L, the other two are not marked at all

Marking internally has CAT28/29

L ? ? Looking at the fittings left to right (anti clockwise)

It's a bayonet fitting so it doesn't matter which is line and neutral. Both Ls (these should be the centre two) go to the terminals the bulb touches. Do not push the copper too deep as I think in these holders the spring-loaded pins push down the same hole your wire goes up when you insert the lamp.

The other two are loop terminals that are not connected to anything, so you don't have to use a separate strip connector or similar. Generally one would be used to join or make safe the earth, and the other either unused or used for the unswitched phase if it's wired 3-plate.

L will be the loop terminals from memory, it should be obvious however which ones connect to the bulb contacts.

L is loop. Goes nowhere. There will be a terminal for an earthing conductor, the ones you want to put the phase (red) and neutral (black) into will be the ones directly behind the prongs on the other side where the globe presses against

Bayonet sockets don't have a labelled earth terminal as they're considered double insulated, so no earth is required to be connected (but an earth is required to be present in new installations in case someone wants to swap to a different fitting).

Come across quite a lot with a labelled earth terminal, marked green with an earth symbol or E

Might vary by manufacturer. I don't think the PDL ones do.

Thanks all, as expected you can wiring into either of the centre terminals. Will wire it up later today.

Close but not quite.

The two outer terminals are labelled L for loop.

The two inner are the lamp connections, they are spring loaded as you said, so good tip about not going too deep and are not polarity conscious.

There is no earth connection, you use one of the loop terminals for that.
