There are some not so great looking electrical supply wires coming into mine and my neighbours house and a rusty looking part that is holding the service line in place.

I would like someone to fix these up but unsure what they are called, sure anyone giving me a quote will be able to tell me but would be nice to know myself in advance!

I think there are just 2 parts but maybe one of these consists are 2 parts?

OMG,

Thats dodgy as. re the taped joins,

A is a junction box, and B is an insulator bracket.

But as that is on the network side of you electricity supply (behind your main switch) any work done will need to be inspected.

Retermination of that incoming mains into an existing junction box or a new one will solve all your problems.

Only way you can get this fixed is with licensed sparky and a network inspector.

Just get a couple of quotes and go from there.

on the bright side there looks to be enough clean cable doubled up to reach a replacement junction

The official term for A is mains entry box or MEB.
Looking closely you actually have a 2nd MEB in the background, which implies that the property has two connections. Is it 2 flats?

I think that technically this may 'belong to' your local Lines Company, certainly they ought to be involved with any alteration / maintenance.
What you have looks very substandard, by the way.

I'd start with them, it may be work they do themselves or have a mandated contractor do.

Mine was in worse condition than that, the box itself had pulled away from the house and was hanging in space. My sparky came round and replaced it on the spot, just chucked on some big rubber gloves and dealt to it then and there, 10 minute job.

The black box is a point of entry box, the item marked B is the line tensioner. Where in NZ are you? this is a private part of the network, not maintained by the lines company and any tidy up work will have to be engaged privately from a company with linesmen employed (if it isn't just working on the point of entry box but infact fixing up the exposed linetaps etc)  I can suggest someone if you are in the Auckland area.

The disconnected downpipe, which would result in water pouring all over the wiring on a windy day, doesn't inspire confidence either...

The new blue paint and masking tape suggests a bit of a do up of one end of a semi-detached. The downpipe is probably only temporarily off to be painted half blue and half white :-).

That's the great thing about this forum, ask for help with a replacement retrosnub phlarper for your sliding paff gongbudger and there's at least one person on here who'll know about it.

yeah your dead right, someone here will know what it is or what you are trying to figure out.

A - looks to be a reasonably new mains entry but the other one looks to be 60's maybe 70's at a guess by the shape, if they look good internally and test out all ok they should be fine but i would seriously look at replacing the bobbin and Deadend as they look like they could fail sometime soon.

The sparky might even find some old VIR in the older mains entry box if so you could rewire the newer one to take the twin 16mm buy just adding another terminal

To be more exact B is a D shackle with porcelain bobbin.

What everyone seems to be missing is that there is a second mains entry box. The neutral screen service is 2 core and the neutral is shared.
You definitely need a suitability qualified person to disconnect the service about,e before doing any work.

A is a mains entry box, quite new compared to the one in the background.

B is a service shackle.

Your electrician can do the work, but they should arrange with the network company to do a safety disconnect 1st, you could get your network company to do it, but be prepared for a huge bill.

You may want to arrange a builder at the same time to check/replace the timber that the service shackle is mounted on, as there are signs of rust on the bolt so that means the timber has been wet and quite possibly rotten.

Mains entry boxes, the older one will need replacing IF any work is done on it, usually they are so old and seized up the only way to disassemble them is to smash them off, you should be ok with the newer one, but the screw heads on the terminals have a tendency to break off, these can be individually replaced easily, and are still a current model.

As this is maintenance on your service mains, this is classified as low risk, so no high risk inspection is required.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you could get your electrician to get a 4 terminal mains entry box (the transnet shear off terminal ones are good

TNMEB3PH and about $30 cheaper than the PDL ones) and the overhead wire can go straight in to it without all the messy tape, extra wires and connectors.

Each entry box supplies a different property. The left and right sides of the house are probably mirror images with a firewall separating them.
