Hey wardrobe DIY experts! We are replacing our old 60s style wardrobes with a more open design so we pulled out the sides (see pic) but there are 15cm wide gaps in the carpet where the walls used to be. We want doors on the next two we do, so can someone recommend how I find new sliding doors that have a bottom track to fill that space? Looking for a budget option and want to get the sizes right and ordered before we frame them! Thanks so much!

Given the smallish overall opening that you wish to put the doors into, I doubt that any door system with tracks would have tracks 15 cm wide. We have a triple passing sliding door arrangement (i.e. three tracks in the floor track) and that is only 10 cm wide.

Why not cut out the carpet straight across the front then find a new piece of carpet, matching as closely as possible, to replace the removed square. If you put doors at the front, the join in the carpet might be able to be out of sight right below the doors - and you wouldn’t really see the new carpet until the doors are opened.

Alternatively you could cut out the 15 cm strip of carpet right across then put down a 15 cm wide white-painted piece of 10 or 18 mm pine across the opening  - which could look like a threshold or doorstep below the doors.

Hi thanks for the advice, I wasn't very clear sorry this is one we have done but aren't putting a door on, just a pic to show the style and the gaps. We are doing two other wardrobes that are approx 2m wide a d 1.5m wide so for those ones (or at least the 2m one in the master) we want sliding doors on tracks. We may have to do as you say and fill the gaps with a different carpet but I'm hoping we won't need to and there's a system that has wide bases.

I have bought three lots of sliding doors from these guys in Silverdale (Auckland) - they have a Christchurch branch too but not sure if that helps you in Nelson. Our 3.6 metre triple-door arrangement came from them. They make quad-door setups too. I’m thinking you could order a double-door setup but specify quad track for the floor - even though you would be using only two of the tracks. The quad track might be close to 15 cm.

You could ring and have a chat with them - in my case Teresa (or Therese?) on the phones in Silverdale is really helpful and great to deal with. They make great products and at very reasonable prices IMO.

Thinking further and simpler: If you’re happy with a 15 cm wide track but only need double doors, why not put down a piece of white-painted pine 15 cm wide (as mentioned above) - then mount your double track on that. It’s going to look “white and 15 cm” either way and this is simpler.

Do you have floor mats using the same carpet? You can have someone patch the holes with these.

Unfortunately no on the floor mats, but that's a good idea about painted pine actually that seems a cheap and cheerful option! And then just mount the tracks on top. I might do that thanks!

If you rip the carpet out of one of them, you will have spare carpet to fix the other 2 nicely

Another option is to lay a different floor covering in the wardrobe entirely. A bit of vinyl or other floor covering might actually work quite well (look for renovation leftovers) and would look fine once doors are in place. Then you can get the cheapest doors that fit your requirements with no need to fill the 15 cm. If you're putting down a floor track you're going to have to put some SmoothEdge and trim the carpet on the outside of the door anyway, so a transition to a different covering inside will be simple.

When I rearranged my wardrobe layout, I removed the carpet from within them entirely and replaced with some laminate flooring.  Didn't bother with doors at all, but in your case, laminate flooring on one side of the track, existing carpet on the other.
