Hi

I've got a 1960s cedar weatherboard house with a profile that is now not standard.  I need to replace some soakers so looking at 150mm x 9mm (return) but all I can find is galvanised.  I only need about 5 or 6 so don't want to go pestering a special order.  Is there a paint I can put on the galvanised ones to protect them from the acids from the cedar as I can't find stainless steel or copper that are not special order.

Anyone done this before and know what I should use?

Cheers

Chris

Anzor have copper corner soakers for 150mm & 200mm weatherboards x 13mm. How different are your requirements? Could those be trimmed?

Are your cedar weatherboards painted? If so you could do what I did, I got galv, painted and filled the weatherboard, put the soakers on, then primed and painted. So far it seems to have worked well. I just have the L shaped ones, not corner ones, got them from Placemakers.

If they're not painted you could I guess find something to paint just that tiny part of the weatherboard before putting galv on.

Have a look at this thread too.

Yep they're painted.  I've read your thread but I wasn't sure how they would last.  The plan was to fill the joint with a flexible filler and then use the soaker over the top so I might do your approach unless someone has a better idea :-)

I did mine a couple of years ago. I painted, filled, it cracked again. So I filled, put the soaker over, filled the edges with no more gaps weatherboard, metal primer, and painted. So far they've lasted well.

cool sounds like a cheap and effective approach.  I'll grab some soakers from bunnings as I need the 9mm return and try that!  Appreciate it!

Placemakers had a different range of products / stock when I was looking.
