Yes I've trawled through the previous threads on this topic but they are all outdated and locked.

Our situation is that our old Troy Bilt ICE lawnmower has finally succumb to old age with striking a rock causing the mounting casting of the engine to fracture. As we have recently installed PV it makes sense to use it to run a lawnmower as well as our car, house & sheds.

From previous experience with lawnmowers my wish-list goes something like this:

  • Substantial battery capacity as we are rural and have significant lawn area, though usually mowed in portions over several days.
  • Battery compatibility with the De Walt Flexivolt (18V/54V) ones I've recently invested in as part of a power tool set.
  • Disk with flails type of blade system and a metal skirt/body as hitting stones and the occasional tree stump is unavoidable.
  • Reasonably wide swept blade area as I'm not into mowing our lawns in 1 foot increments.
  • Powerful - weather and other commitments result in long grass at times.
  • Catch or mulch abilities.
  • Walk behind but not self driven.

I've seen plenty of less than positive reviews of the De Walt mowers so not sold on that brand for a mower. I'm not averse to investing in multiple batteries so long as the economics of this aren't prohibitive.

The disc blade system used to be standard issue on Victa lawnmowers and successfully reduces shock loading the mechanicals resulting in bent blades and crankshafts so pretty sold on this feature. Flail blades are also cheap and easy to replace but of the mowers I can find blade details for it seems bar blades are prevalent.

unless you buy a lot of batteries, or stop and charge often that's a lot of lawn to mow with a battery push mower. especially if its medium to long. the battery will also get hot which may not be good for it either

Have you considered a ride-on mower? 1500sq m is pretty big. I guess I have 100 sq m and it takes me maybe an hour to edge and mow, I wouldn't want to spend 15 hours every week or two!

I think battery electric is probably impractical. Petrol is probably the way to go.

Like I said we usually mow our lawns in stages over a few days so would seem doable with an electric mower.

I've now discovered that the Victa 82V mower has a 'swing back' blade system, and that Bunnings are currently listing these for $809 with 2x 2.0Ah batteries. Maybe negotiate an upgrade to a 4.0Ah battery on one of the 2.0s as the 4.0Ahs are good for more than an hour's mowing. Sounds like a plan?

A ride on would be impractical as we have a lot of shrubs, fruit trees and garden beds surrounded by lawns. I've mowed the lot in less than 3 hours when not catching the clippings. Line trimmer does the edges in less than an hour, if I bother to do them. Besides getting another ICE mower also seems a bit counterproductive in respect of making use of free electricity from the PV.

We're also invested in the Max/Flexvolt 20V/60V (called 18V/54V in NZ) system.
Generally Dewalt stuff's great - we have a whole bunch of their shop and garden tools including multiple batteries, a pole saw system, weedeater etc.

Unfortunately their 2x20V lawnmower's a bit of a let down.
We bought a DCMW220P2 Lawn Mower - on sale locally - which included two 5Ah Batteries (and yet another charger).

Our first mow - medium length, slightly damp lawn - we managed just over 200m2 before it ran out of juice.
Thinking the batteries hadn't fully charged, we popped in a different set of 5Ah batteries and got another 250m2 done (just short of our 500m2 suburban lawn).
Both sets of batteries were very hot when removed them - a sign they were being over-taxed by the mower.

We've since found that DCB609 9Ah flexvolt batteries will do the whole lawn - luckily we already had a pair of them.
I'd have returned the mower except it does have some positives - it's light, but well built with a steel deck, flips up backwards for easy storage, has a decent (one piece, not flail) blade etc.
I also able to trade away the 5ah batteries and charger that came with it to a friend for another Dewalt tool I wanted.

So - yep - you'd need multiple battery sets to get your lawn done, and that likely wouldn't be cost effective.

My kids run their own mowing business (gets them heaps of pocket money locally), after using my petrol for a while they went off and got an EGO

much lighter than a petrol, lots of torque and lasts a good amount of time on battery I was surprised how good it was.  Buying a battery without the mower will be an eye watering experience but they've not had to yet, plus side is the battery also goes in the weed eater as well.

Since you are high hi-tech with solar have you considered a robotic mower?

Some have much higher capacity than 1500+ sq m. After initial time installing there is more free time not behind a mower.

However, having to deal with rocks and tree stumps may be a problem with any mower as you have found already!
