I'm keen to have a go at putting one of the Bestway above ground pools in the backyard, probably along the lines of this one here:

https://www.tradetested.co.nz/p/home-outdoor-living/pools-spas/pools/bestway-power-steel-rectangle-pool-set-4-12m-x-2-01m-x-1-22m

We have a small backyard in Auckland with kids aged 10, 7 and 5, so I reckon it'd be ideal over the summer.

Very interested to hear from others that have had these pools (or similar ones) previously or have them currently.

What are the things to watch out for?
What are the hidden costs?
What to get in terms of keeping it clean?
What to avoid?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

We've had a couple of the round ones (intex?), approx 20,000L and they've been magnificent. Only replaced the first one after about three years of use as we got a good deal on a new one, otherwise would have run it for another summer.

Make sure your site is flat and level and that you get all the creases out of the floor before filling. I always emptied, cleaned and took down at the end of each summer, folded carefully and stored. You definitely get better at putting them up over time!

We do have good quality bore water so filling etc was never an issue.

First of all, check the fencing requirements, it still varies from council to council, you dont want to get caught out, it will cost you a lot of money ( even though it is a temp pool )

You will need a good pump and filter, you will need to run it for longer than you think to get one water cycle.

We used to have chlorine tablets but there are lots of other ways to keep the pool clean these days, you have to find the one best for you.

It will take a long time to fill the pool. as a kid I remember it taking days, we got hoses from the neighbors, there were no water meters back then :-)

Oh, you will need a skimmer rot the top and sucker / vacuum to get the gunk from the bottom.

Make sure you have a flat hard surface. If you have a soggy lawn its not going to fair to well with all the weight.

As for cleaning it, it depends on its location. If near trees expect regular scooping and cleaning.

Filters cleaned/changed weekly, depending on how much usage it gets, plus chlorine.

We had a cover on ours which helped with keeping heat in it as well as debris out of it.

Not sure if a swimming pool would fall afoul of the Watercare/Council water restrictions.

I believe it does, I do the IT work for a pool company, they have to tanker the water in now, they used to have a meter on a fire hydrant.

Thanks for your thoughts @dimsim, and great to hear the good feedback! What did you use to keep it clean while it was being used over the summer months?

Thanks for the feedback @sattv - much appreciated. Do you think these pools come with a suitable pump, or would you recommend getting something separately? Any thoughts on what capacity pump might be appropriate? The pool in the link comes with a pump that is rated for 33L/min, against the water capacity of the pool of 7,250L (90% filled)
