Hi

Recently reclad a garage with plywood.  Now need to screw something to the wall, but am not sure which wall plugs to buy.  Seems to be available for gib and masonry, but I saw nothing for plywood cladding.

Can anyone suggest what product I need to use.

How heavy is your item and how thick is your ply? You shouldn't need any anchors.

Have you considered prong nuts?

depends on weight and thickness of the ply

12mm ply should be fine for most things, heavy things should be attached to the studs as with most types of cladding.

Suggest toggle anchors if it's thin ply

Its a grab rail which has a horizontal bar and a vertical one.  https://www.bunnings.co.nz/award-eziliving-32-x-450-x-450mm-90-knurled-grab-rail_p0160264

I cant get every screw point into a stud so was wondering if I should use a plug.  The vertical bit is fine - that will go into a stud.

That really needs to go into a stud.

Person using it will rip it out of the wall when they pull on it

even with plugs it will struggle to hold.

it will be 9 or 12mm ply

would it not have been wise to put blocking in before you relined?

or could you not remove a sheet to put some blocking in there?

If you reclad, then that gave you the opportunity i
to install additional support into the framing for fixing things to the wall. If your screwed it, can you remove the ply. Toggles will usually not be as strong.

I had light weight cladding in my garage,

I put a piece of heavy ply bridging the studs to carry a 20m retracting compressor hose reel.

If the vertical part is in a stud and if it is 12mm ply, then I am not sure adding toggles will do much to what the wood currently provides. If you really think you need it, gravity toggles are designed to work with plywood. However I suspect you would have as much chance of ripping the ply off the wall or shearing the screws off, as you would pulling them out.

If aesthetics aren't a big consideration that could screw'n'glue a strip of 12mm ply along where they want to put the grab rail, than screw the rail into the 22mm ply.
