Hi -

Ive installed a gas stovetop with a 9kg LPG bottle. All gaswork done by licensed gasfitter. I am told the outside gas bottle needs weather protection for the sign-off - has anyone DIY'ed this (or repurposed something else)? The specifically designed ones look lovely but cost $$$ - the gas bottle isnt very visible so I'd prefer a cheaper solution.

I have a twin pack of 45kg Cyclinders which dont have any weather protection, other than the regulator/tank switch thing which has a very basic rain shield. This is the way all twin pack cylinder that i have seen are installed. I dont see why a 9kg bottle would require weather protection but I may be wrong. The installation was re-certified maybe 18 months ago also. Only the adjacent underhouse vents needed to be sealed as part of that certification.

My inlaws just have a plywood box to cover theirs, I dont even think they have any vent holes.

I will check next time I am over.

Put the vent holes at the bottom as the gas is heavier than air if there is a leak.

I don't know if the law has changed in this regard. Our 9kg cooking gas was also installed by a licensed fitter several years ago and is outside near the wall with no protection. I didn't know it was supposed to have any.

We also have 2 45kg tanks no weather protection. Only think we've done is enclose them as we get insitu refill and they said they wouldn't do swappa bottle to to uneven ground

Maybe 9kg tanks will rust? The 45kg ones look like the are galvanised

all bottles need to be installed on a solid platform and in-situ installs apparently need to have line of sight to the filling truck.

We have one 45kg outside cylinder, not our problem. We have a BBQ, new 9kg, but outside it got some minor surface rust. If you go to exchange it as is common, rust is an issue, so its our problem. So I got a new 9kg, its in the garage. The issue is the 9kg is MINE, the 45kg ISN'T

My setup is pretty much identical to this and it was installed by a gas fitter in 2018 so unless the rules have changed in the last 5 years, this is obviously an acceptable setup.

The caveat is whether a different standard applies to 9kg bottles - because as someone else mentioned, the 45kg bottles all appear galvanised whereas the 9kg ones are painted.

The upside down plastic garbage pail cover looks like a solid and cheap DIY option though!

I've never run into a problem exchanging any 9kg cylinders at BP. They dont check anything when being exchanged. Old for new :)

Thanks @wellygary you’ve just solved my problem of sea spray rusting ours all the time. I was thinking plastic wraps etc but this is far better.

My twin 45's are out in the open with 600x600 pavers leveled

No probs with sign off, 9Kg maybe a weight issue for protection?

It will be protection from weather for the regulator. If you have a plumbing world store nearby they often have folded galv sheet hoods on the shelf. Failing that just get a bit of tin with a fold in it and make a hood to cover regulator. Shouldn't really matter what it's made from, it's literally to stop rain getting to regulator.

Odd the installer didn't fit one. We used to fit them at every install, otherwise, it isn't compliant...
