So do I just go to no cowboys or builders crack?

No idea what to do if I just buy one of these: Shop Kogan SmarterHome™ 2.6kW Inverter Split System Air Conditioner (Reverse Cycle) - Dick Smith

The couple of companies I spoke to only install ones they provide.

Based on the north shore in auckland.

I would probably check with a local electrician.

We had an electrician over for some other work at our rental and asked them if they can install a heat pump and they said yes, so we we bought a cheap one from trade depot which they were happy to install. Install was around 450-500.

Most just charge time and material so you want someone who's done many of them as they will do it much faster. The advantage of the sparky is he can provide power to the unit at the same.

My electrician supplies and installs heat pumps. They did a small Daikin for me, it cost about $3k for one about 2.5 or 3kw including supply.

Electricians are probably more likely to fit heat pumps they don't supply than dedicated heat pump installers.

We bought two 2.6kW (bedrooms) and a 7.6kW (lounge) Kogan heat pumps. They are great bar one fault - they lose wifi maybe every ten weeks and require a power cycle (walk outside) to re-connect. Would still recommend for the price. We control exclusively via app or Alexa.

I asked Kogan to recommend an installer in Auckland so there would be no warranty issues down the line and they suggested https://ctwide.co.nz

Cost to install all three in April 2021 was $2100 + GST

IMO it can be false economy not to go for a well known brand, and that also build quiet units. Installation is likely the same, and that can be a big part of the cost. I know who have got heatpumps installed and had them replaced because they were too noisy.

Also I have had no issues for over 4 years with the Mistsubishi wifi adapter.

the specs are lets say interesting.

one thing is it looks like its single speed, which is typical for many cheap brands. the outputs and energy ratings look a little to good to be true.

if your looking for cheap ones look at Gee, at least they are a huge manufacture.

I'm in.
Tuya based so I largely know what to expect.

Says it's an inverter so it will do the job.

just because its an inverter doesn't mean its a variable. we had an old single speed inverter mitsi heat pump. the inverter is on fan not the compressor. if its variable the specs should say the min/max.

have you done the calcs or is it a guess? what size room and part of the country your in?

a lot of bedrooms or small rooms can struggle to get units small enough to work well, even with variable. fixed speed is a lot worse. if its a bigger room, a smaller one is better than bigger.

I second this - you are usually (unless it's the deep South) better off slightly undersized than oversized. If you are too oversized, you will end up operating it manually, as it won't be able to keep a stable temperature.

Used a basic calculator online - 16.5 floor area with 2.5 - 3m ceilings. recommended a 2.5kw one, and here we are.

Honestly - just looking how to get them installed. Got one quote now, and another guy coming to take a look today from builders crack.
