After many years our house will need to be re-roofed (my poor savings). About 50% of the house is exposed beams, so have Geekzoners any thoughts on if I should try dropping in some cabling while the section of the roof is off above the exposed beam ceiling. Need to not get in the way of the roofers while they work.

Many Thanks

Never hurts to do this, as any exterior walls will be a huge PITA to get cables through the top plate once the roof is back on.

Even if you pre-run pull strings, then at least you have the option of running cables later down the track. Get yourself a decent auger drill bit and extensions to reach through the dwangs.

Yep, I would.

We did this a few years ago when replacing the roofing iron on our house.

As already said, if the opportunity presents itself then go for it.

Just watch your hole sizes, with 90mm deep studding I think the hole size can only be 25mm max according to building specs. Best check before you start.

small tip, i know its obvious but don't go putting cables over rafters etc where the roofers could hit them with a screw.

While the roof is off, also upgrade your insulation.

My inlaws did not think to ask and it was too late.

Also a good idea is get an electrician to check the wiring in the roof space too. And also a good time to get any extra power feeds (sockets/lighting) installed.

And when you put in the cabling, calculate how much you'll need and then put in twice as much everywhere.

Alternatively, buy a 300m roll and aim to have zero left when you're done.

Either way, you can never have too much cabling in place.
