Just doing some quoting for a hot water heat pump system I want to get installed. I was quoted a Econergy system, that's a NZ brand. They are well under the price of Rheem, about $5k less. I was wonder if anyone's had their system, I'm looking at the two unit system:

one thing to watch with two part systems, is those look like they are connected to the tank by water. that can be a problem in very cold areas. however they are much simpler/cheaper to install and can fit to many more tanks.

you can get the other type which connects to the tank with refrigeration pipes/gas (like a typical heat pump does). doesn't suffer from freezing but it will be more expensive and can only use the correct tank.

We have 2x of that system for 10 years, and the only problem we find with it is the slow recovery time. That does depend on the size of the cylinder though. In the first 3 years of owning it, the control box in the attic would "squeal" and we would have to switch the system off and back on again to fix it. That issue hasn't appeared for the last 7 years.

Great, thanks. Yea my unit will be in the attic and the fan outside where a heat pump fan currently sits but is getting retired.

Out of interest, what did you get quoted for this system? We're looking at getting a heat pump hot water setup to replace our current low pressure system from last century with something mains pressure.

We asked about the mitsubishi ecodan and daiken altherma since they seem popular in the UK but the mitsubishi are v expensive (15k) here and the altherma are not suitable for larger houses.

I asked about the pricing and they suggested the panasonic reclaim system which is australian made, decently sized and also not too expensive.

@hamish225 If you need WiFi/app based smart control then I would recommend Reclaim's (with v2 controller) own branded outdoor CO2 compressor unit (Made in Japan by Chofu). Its very quiet at 37dB compared to 43dB for Panasonic's CO2. Sanden's outdoor compressor unit sold in NZ (by Rheem NZ) is the exact same model Chofu as Reclaim but AFAIK, there are no WiFi/app based smart there system though the warranty on the cylinder and compressor unit IIRC is longer than Reclaim. Mitsubishi ecodan is very nice (43dB) but the limitations are that there outdoor cylinder AFAIK, is limited to 200l size max in NZ? If you want a bigger size 3rd party cylinder to work with ecodan compressor then you need to install an ecodan control box which can be installed somewhere internal only and not outside.

Do whatever you want to do man.
