Hello,

We are getting new carpet shortly and would like to remove a number aerial cables that are not used (we don’t use the sky dish or the aerial)

The cables are extremely long, and haphazard (was like this when we moved in)

Can we cut the cables internally and fill the holes, and then deal with the remaining external cabling at a later date? (Much bigger job, as two storey house)

IANA HT installer but I’d say you could proceed exactly as set out in your final paragraph. Passive cables so no danger - so long as you’re sure that’s what they are.

There's a couple of things that could be injecting power back into those cables to check for first:

1) Any satellite receiver or Sky decoder
2) DC power injector for a masthead amplifier - this will be a small box at one antenna outlet that also has a power supply plugged into a power point.

If none of those are present, should be fine to just cut them.

probably one of those goes to another outlet.

imho i would just wind them up and leave them tidy. you may well want to use them in years to come. if they are cut off its going to cost to repair.

also its better to have it for the next person. its off putting to a buyer who has to go install new dish etc. kiwis don't own houses for very long, odds are you will move soon.

Given the state of that area, I would pry off the skirting board, cut the cables back inside the wall, and then drop on a new piece of skirting board, it'll be less work and look better than trying to patch the existing one.

If it were me I’d install a blank plate next to that outlet, push the cables back into the wall and tie the ends up behind the blank. Just in case one day I decide they’re useful somehow.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

…. assuming they’re still connected to something at the other end.
