Hi team,
I'm looking for a lawn push mower, for a grass patch roughly 50-100sqm, some of it is fairly flat.
Can someone please recommend a good mower that won't break apart after a few years?
Open to petrol or electric but it needs to be cordless.

We have this corded one:

Cheap, goes hard, 3 year warranty.
Bit of a chore working around a long cord, and coiling / uncoiling it of course.

I have had a pretty basic one by Masport for the last 20 years. Aluminium body, so hasn't rusted out.
It's looking pretty tatty now, but still starts first pull and only gets serviced very rarely.
It does need a new blade, so I'll likely take it in for a service soon and get the motor looked at for peace of mind, but it's been flawless.
It lives under the deck with a tarp on it in the wet and wild climate of Auckland...never misses a beat.

As much as I would love a trusty Masport, I think that the newer ones just aren't the same anymore (I've heard).
I think we would like to buy a new one.

I guess making good quality equipment that lasts doesn't make for regular repeat business.

We got a Ryobi corded electric from Bunnings in 2020 that's still going strong. Before that we had a Victa Lawnkeeper corded electric for about 12 years before we finally replaced it - it was still working but the plastic was cracked and we wanted a more powerful mower.
What is your budget and are you wanting it self propelled. I have Viking mower, alloy deck, Briggs and Stratton engine that is about 20 years old and still works well. But I noticed a lot of the new lawnmowers being sold are mainly steel decks. Even the Stihl electric ones. The more expensive Stihl ones are self propelled and have a removeable battery that can be used in other things like chainsaws.

Bummer - I've been so impressed with the longevity of mine, I assumed they wouldn't mess with a winning formula and would just keep on making them the same way - after all, they already had all the moulds, tooling and know-how to make great mowers.
Masport can do their best but it comes down to the engine they can get for the price.

And ive got the exact opposite experience,
I have one alu chassis masport and its rusted. its about 5-6 years old. Never again wouldnt recommend.
Why did it rust you ask. Galvanic corrosion. theres metal plates right on a corner and its let go right where 2 different metals meet.
Masport can go get in the bin as far as im concerned. $1k of mower and they arent interested in sorting it out.

Masport - Ali body with a B&S Quantum 4 stroke engine. Bullet proof. Your grandkids will still be using it.
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
masport. only problem is the side grass chute, the clip broke. i've yet to fix it. i also find it a bit small for long grass. when i was looking at mower i found it very hard to find one with a side chute.

probably one from the 90s/00s when places didn’t cheap out of the metal components on the body.
im running a victor I bought in 2001 for about $700 at the time . No signs of rust thankfully. I don’t think motors cause a problem (though I can’t speak for electric or battery) but the bodies tend to give way.

Have a look at a Honda HRU196, had the HRU195 model for over 20+ years, worn out a couple of catchers and just give it regular regular oil changes.
Have had a Masport 450AL with a Briggs and Stratton engine for 15 years now. That thing is indestructible.
