Many years ago our house was renovated and my father at the wanted to do a surround sound 5.1 setup. I know the placement is not correct.

He ended up mucking up the locations of the four wall plates in the ceiling see red circles in below image.  the location is about 5 feet from where the blindfold door are shown in the below plans

This is what it looks like in the ceiling. on the right side looking towards the back of the room. the left side is in exactly the same position.

We have since removed the fronts and are using tower speakers beside the TV with a centre channel on top of the AV cabinet. and subwoofer is next to left front.

My father is hard of hearing also and the location doesn't help him

Where would be the best place to relocate the rear surrounds and also potentially move the unused front channel plates?

The front channel speakers are vintage Roberts SS-80 II

Centre channel is KEF

Rear speakers are Onkyo they came with the second 5.1 setup we brought around 2016.

Subwoofer is SVS PB series. Replaced the onkyo sub.

Have you run the Audyssey setup?

e.g. https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX2600H/NA/EN/GFNFSYphwaueoj.php plenty of youtube videos if you prefer.

So long as the speakers are roughly in the right location the timing of the audio will be corrected so it 'arrives' at the right time for primary seating position.

Its more that the two rear speakers are in front of best seating position for watching the TV.

The rear speakers are directly over the top of the side couches too.
