Hi there

We are planning our new house and I am investigating IR systems to control 4 areas/TVs.

I have recently set up a simple sigtech system in a mates house and it works sweet, but I am looking for something a little more techy for my own house.

We have will myski hdi boxes, two HT network receivers, a blu ray player. These will be located and distributed from a server rack in the garage in a server rack.

At some stage I will also add also my and some sort of media player such as a apple TV or boxee etc but these will be hard wired through a switch.

I am looking for a system that will allow me to control these from each room through an IR receivers and emitters.

I would also like to be able to control them using my idevices so wifi to ir would be prefered.

I don't know much about RS232 systems but am open to whatever ideas.

I like the look of the Redeye Pro system but have only just started looking so keen for advice on systems and any pointers.

No set budget, but want to keep costs under control. I'm keen to run cable myself. Thanks for your help.

I saw in the stewarts electrical brochure a remote extender called 'x-ray remote extender'. It is just an RF transmitter with an IR receiver so no wires needed to get it through walls. Give it a google and see what you find.

I got one of the RedEye (standard) devices and it works pretty well. The activities stuff is what I use mostly, and for controlling Sky when I am watching TV in my bedroom (the Sky box is beside the main TV).

It is not perfect (in terms of lag) but it is definitely usable. The latest upgrade just introduced IP control as well, which I have yet to investigate.

For what it costs (around $200) I think it is a pretty elegant and powerful solution.

I have just built a house and have done something similar to what you are planning.

For IR I used a NZ based company:

Prices are more than what you would pay for a system off ebay but you know it is going to work. The guys also made up a custom cable for me.

I would email them with what you are planning and they will give you an idea of total cost.

My IR system was about $375, this includes the ability to control mysky from 3 rooms and all the other components etc.

That sounds pretty reasonable. And always good to support local operators.
