Hi,

I have just bought a new house (brand new) which has a reasonably sized backyard but unfortunately no deck or anything.

At this stage, I am wondering how much it would cost to get a timber deck built and how much more it would cost to also get a pergola/cover / whatever it's called so that we can keep that outdoor area nice and sheltered from the rain.

Does anyone have any idea/advice or know a good company that I should contact (I am in Auckland)

Auckland also. We had our large deck rehabilitated a few years ago. New decking, handrails, steps down to lawn.
Existing poles and joists were kept. Cost around 6 grand all up.
Using a builder that my dad has used for years, would happily recommend him.
Can take a photo if you are interested.

Tell Dave that Niel in Pakuranga referred you. I do not get a kick-back nor do I have a relation with him, just get Dave to do all my handyman work and happy with him. Not sure if Birkdale might be a bit far away, but worth checking. There might be people better than Dave, there are certainly much worse, but for me it is not worth the time looking further. He is doing all the landscaping at our new-built home. If you find him on TradeMe you can see our home on the last 2 photos (site clearing).

You can expect around $200 or maybe below for a low deck at ground level, and around $30 or so plus material for extras like seats, rails, etc. Don;t know for a high deck though, but this gives you a good starting point.

Thanks for the reference. Not sure about the prices you are quoting, though. Are you saying the deck would be $200 per m2 or something? $200 for a deck (even a low one) seems a bit low...

Ask him for a quote, he might be giving me a special price for doing lots of work and being a good customer. But his prices are not bad and his labour is good. What I was quoted is a bit less than $200 per sqm for a deck under 300mm off the ground, plus any trim like rails ets $30 per hour plus material. Keep in mind I am giving Dave about $15 000 worth of work over 6 to 12 months, so best to get a quote. And having a deck above ground will cost more as you need maybe 6"x6" posts set deep into concrete and lots of bracing.

Building a deck isn?t all that hard. You will feel much more satisfied with the result if you do it yourself, and probably save yourself a bunch of money too.

Unless there are some weird features that you want, then I reckon you should try it yourself first.

You are probably right and I have considered this as well. By getting quotes, I am also hoping to estimate how much more it would cost to get it done.
Also even though the deck doesn't scare me all that much (ok, a little bit...) The pergola is a whole different story, an I am sure that it would be worth building them together rather than trying to retrofit a pergola later on...

Bear in mind that if it is over a certain height, then it may need a building consent and/or be a restricted building work that requires a licensed building practioner.

But in any other case, DIY FTW!!

Nah, it would be at ground level... Maybe need to dig a little bit to have it level with the house and a small concrete pad (~5m2) that was put on the outside...

The better half is a council planner and ive built 30 odd decks in my time. Ground level decks without steps are very straight forward and you can probably cut most quotes in half if you just get the materials in. Maybe get someone to build a nice 'square' (to your house) pergola for you, and then hard bit is done, you can use uprights to attach some of your bearers to, and away you go.

Quite a newbie in that area and I don't understand all the terms, but are you suggesting that I get the pergola built and then DIY a deck underneath it?

I run a Fence, Decking & retaining business with my flatmate. More than happy to come out and measure up the site and provide you with a quote.

And since your through GZ I can give you a discount.

We also have an associate who will be able to do a pergola at the same time if you want. Retro fitting them isn't to hard. If you only went with the deck we would make sure the area required for a pergola is not obstructed & easy to get to.

I used www.deck-king.co.nz/ a while back. They will do a design service and supply plans if you want to build it yourself.
