As per: https://thestreamable.com/news/confirmed-netflix-unveils-first-details-of-new-anti-password-sharing-measures

How Will Netflix Know if You’re Not in Your Home/Primary Location?

Netflix uses information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is connected at your primary location.

If your device is being used outside your home by someone you haven’t authorized, you can sign into your account and sign out on all other devices, then change your password.

RIP those behind CGNAT and those who have dodgy internet that drops semi frequently and gets a new IP address.

Eva888: Will this work with VPN.

I don't see why not. Assuming that your VPN server has a static IP address, Netflix would always see you "coming" from that address.

"Traveling users who want to use Netflix on a hotel smart TV, company laptop, etc. can request a temporary code from the service when signing in. This will give them access to their account for seven consecutive days"

This is gonna trip up a bunch of people....

How generous of them

I'm still amazed at how many people are upset at the simple prospect of having to pay for their own Netflix.

Irrespective of the flawed methodology (It's going to be a right royal pain in the a$$ having to log in all the time), the fact that there are people all over the world saying that they have the right to freeload is frankly laughable.

"I'm going to boycott them" and "Watch them go bankrupt, hurr de hurr". YOU'RE NOT PAYING THEM. They're losing nothing!

At the same time, it's a bit rich for Netflix to say "if you want the best picture quality then you need to pay for Premium, which also allows you to watch it on four computers" and then have a hissy fit when people watch it on four computers.

I actually don't think it will.  There will for sure be plenty of hard luck stories bandied about, and people making public statements of taking a stand and cancelling their subscriptions, "take that Netflix!"...but unless that happens en-mass, it will not make a jot of difference.

If they lose a few % of customers they won't bat an eyelid, as longer term they will likely gain more subscribers as people that truly should have had their own subscription, join up, and if they don't, they were scalping anyway so no loss.  New customers won't know any different.

Sadly another example of a few ruining it for the many.

I was thinking this will be a PITA when I’m on the road, but if it knows my iPad is normally resident at my home, then I assume it will recognise it on the road? It’s only if I tried to sign in a new device, it might pack a sad.

Otherwise, I’ll need to be pre-emptive and download a bunch of stuff before each trip. And how does it work if you use cellular data for some viewing?

I found Neon's device management system tortuous - taking the worst bits of both Lightroom and Neon when combining them.  For example logging on to my laptop that I never watch anything on to do the admin counts as one of my devices and boots off the TV.

So much this. The outrage should be directed at those who cheat the system, not at the company who ask people to pay for what they use. All decisions have a collateral damage component this one doesn't bother me slightly. The extra fee is peanuts. If the people complaining worked the same amount of time they could probably pay for 3-6 months of the extra 'fee'.

So long as work allows you to go home at least once a month.

*Signing into home Wi-Fi at least once every 31 days on your devices will make them “trusted devices,” which Netflix will remember and leave unblocked.

If your device has been blocked incorrectly, you’ll need to contact Netflix in order to get it unblocked.*

So I have about 4 devices including TV in one room all signed in...another 5 in the other rooms including TVs plus a laptop phones and iPads. Some are not ever used for Netflix but are signed in for the rare occasion to avoid searching out the password. All are using the same IP address.

Do they honestly think I’m going to remember to run around the house turning on each device once a month so it doesn’t get blocked?

Update: https://thestreamable.com/news/netflix-claims-it-errantly-posted-password-sharing-rules-that-would-block-devices-outside-of-subscribers-homes

So looks like the exact details of what will be implemented at still to be finalized and will potentially change before global implementation.
