Movie of the Week: Friday 04 December

MIDWAY (2020) [Action & Adventure] @ $0.99 Rental or $9.99 Buy (Dolby VISION/Dolby ATMOS)

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese forces launch a devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. naval base in Hawaii. Six months later, the Battle of Midway commences on June 4, 1942, as the Japanese navy once again plans a strike against American ships in the Pacific. For the next three days, the U.S. Navy and a squad of brave fighter pilots engage the enemy in one of the most important and decisive battles of World War II.

I finally purchased The Matrix Trilogy today. $14.99 with DV/DA on all three films. Bargain!

My gamble of purchasing Collateral (2004) when only $4.99 has paid off. It has been upgraded to Dolby Vision.

The rumour of a new Apple TV 4K announcement is untrue. Maybe next year 🙁

Sony are upgrading some of their older titles to Dolby Vision. Salt (2010) and After Earth (2013). The latter having two listings. One with DV and one still HD. If they have created a new listing for whatever reason, users who have the old version will not get the usual free upgrade. Its just a way to get people to buy it again. Its still possible that the old listing will be upgraded as well.

Did anyone else receive an email from Apple TV+ (do_not_reply@email.apple.com) over the past month or two, titled:

'Enjoy $8.99/month in credit from Apple TV+.' ?

'As a thank you for being an Apple TV+ subscriber, we’re applying $8.99 in credit to your Apple ID each month you’re subscribed from November through January 2021. You can use the credit however you like — for movies in the Apple TV app, games in the App Store, other Apple services, or simply to pay for Apple TV+.

....

Your credit will be automatically applied to your Apple ID at the end of each month. "

I've not received the credit, and have been trying to chase it up with Apple Support but am going round in circles.

It's not a scam:

Picked up Independence Day/Independence Day: Resurgence and The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 today. The 2-Packs were reduced to $12.99 each.

All are Dolby VISION or HDR10/Dolby ATMOS, except Independence Day which originally had DTS:X audio so is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. It would be nice if we got a software update supporting DTS:X; but it will likely never happen. I can dream ðŸĪŠ

Many of the 2-Pack Movie Bundles have been reduced to $9.99 and $12.99 for a limited time. I couldn't resist adding the two Fantastic Beasts movies to my collection ($12.99). I also grabbed a 3-Pack of The Expendables for the same price. All films are Dolby VISION/Dolby ATMOS except Expendables 3 which is still HD only.

FYI: Movies that have been released on disc with DTS:X or DTS-HD MA audio, mostly play back on Apple TV 4K in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. There are however, some titles that have been re-encoded in Dolby ATMOS, but these are the exception rather than the rule.

Can we expect to get DTS codecs in a future software update, or new Apple TV? I doubt it, but I would love to be proven wrong.

In the meantime I find that the Dolby Surround or Neural:X options on my Yamaha receiver (and all other receivers with Atmos/DTS:X decoding), do a marvellous job of upscaling stereo and 5.1/7.1 mixes to immersive surround audio.

Movie of the Week: Friday 18 December

LAST CHRISTMAS (2019) [ROM-COM] @ $0.99 Rental or $9.99 Buy (HDR10/Dolby Digital Plus)

Nothing seems to go right for young Kate, a frustrated Londoner who works as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. But things soon take a turn for the better when she meets Tom -- a handsome charmer who seems too good to be true. As the city transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, Tom and Kate's growing attraction turns into the best gift of all -- a Yuletide romance.

3-Packs are being offered for less than $20. Stock up guys 😀

I paid $34.99 for The Lord of the Rings 3-Pack (Theatrical Editions), and they are being offered at $19.99 this week 🙂 I should have taken my own advice, and waited for a sale.

I'm taking advantage of the bundle offers this week. Just purchased The Dark Knight Trilogy for $19.99. All three films have Dolby VISION, but, as they are Christopher Nolan films, they don't have Dolby ATMOS audio.
