Not to gloat (and hopefully not going to end up cursing myself), but on Google TV streamer have had no problems once we logged back in.  Skimming through this thread and my partner's experience with Ipad seems to indicate the majority of the problems are Apple based.

It would appear it's devices that need a native core. Where as the likes of chrome and tvs with chrome OS may be web streams of the online site like a PWA + tokens and enough grunt for drm and h264 etc. So looks like non new browser devices such as LG, sony, Samsung pre 2020 are also struggling. They killed anything Samsung 2015/2016 and   acknowledge.

It may be be because the Apple TV is a fairly popular media device so there's just more data points. TVNZ would know of course.

Interestingly, the TVNZ app is the number one (most downloaded) Apple TV app in NZ.

And as an Apple TV user, it is frustrating see the media articles quoting TVNZ that updates are being released daily, yet the ATV app remains on v7.0.1 (18 April).

Not that that would be expected to fix what are probably server side issues with some programs only being in 360p(?) streams. Watching season 2 of From, and the average bitrate is just over 800kb/s.

Based on my experience trying to communicate with the help desk, there's every chance they're blissfully ignorant of the whole issue.

Admission is not in their best interest given investments and dividends.

It was somewhat ironic that they make the major release on a  weekend and not have support available for it however

Agree. I raised a ticket with them as soon as I realised there was an issue; heard nothing.

Same on Apple TV. App reboot then got in, then selecting a show showed no available episodes. Exit (again) and go back it and the episodes showed up.

Presumably a server side issue if the same issue showing on multiple client platforms.

Got a response to my ticket about iPad landscape from a corporate robot saying what amounts to:

“er yeah sorry, new app is hot garbage and we might fix it some time”.

What is interesting to me is that they were allowed to publish in the AppStore with this. There are some automated code checks/blocks on this type of approach.

Response:

We acknowledge that viewers are presently unable to preview landscape mode on the iPad when utilising the home screen.
This occurs because the new platform does not currently support landscape orientation; however, it will be addressed in an update in the future.
In the interim, we sincerely acknowledge the frustration experienced by our viewers concerning this matter, and we extend our apologies”

This takes the cake for utter nonsense on their part. While every new rollout expects some issues, the sheer volume across multiple platforms suggests that testing wasn't undertaken with any rigour, but when almost without exception (looking at you Saltburn) every single piece of content you distribute is in a landscape format you deliberately choose a platform that doesn't work in landscape...

They've done this update to allow for paid streaming. I wonder if we'll have the option of paying to be ad free. Anything under $10/month I might consider.

The article I read referenced paid sports streaming specifically which is probably reasonable. However it’s not unheard of for a FTA service to offer ad free streaming for a subscription. Channel 4 UK comes to mind.

I'm using a Chromecast with Google TV and have no problems with the TVNZ+ app. It updated itself and I had to log in again but after that everything was fine. My continue watching list was there as well as the items I'd bookmarked. Quality is fine.

Now that I've said all this I'll probably go to watch it tonight and find it doesn't work!

Maybe they're planning to charge a fee to allow your iPad to display their landscape content in landscape format! 😆
