Dolby Atmos is more than just a buzzword - it can transform your movies, shows and games.
As any regular cinemagoer knows, sound isn't just heard, it's experienced in three dimensions and underscored with bass for those 'chased by a T-rex' moments. That's because modern films don't just rely on dynamic visuals to work their magic; they use spatial audio to bring it all to life like never before. If you've ever wondered what made the bullets in Tenet zing past your ears, or how the worms in Dune: Part Two made the seat shake, it's all down to the cinema equivalent of a Dolby Atmos system.
If you've wondered what the fuss is about or have already experienced 3D surround audio and find yourself considering an upgrade, here we explain Dolby Atmos and how to get it. By the end, you'll know exactly how a budget soundbar with Atmos can outclass an expensive non-Atmos home cinema system.
Traditional film soundtracks (older 2.0 stereo mixes, right up to 5.1 channel surround sound) deliver audio on a flat plane. In other words, even with speakers in front and behind, they each simply emit a single audio channel in the direction they happen to be facing. However, spatial sound breaks that convention. Any movie or show supporting spatial sound will have an audio soundtrack that comes packaged with extra information. A compatible soundbar or AV amplifier can use that spatial data to project multiple effects and more into three-dimensional space around you. Unlike traditional 5.1 or 7.1 sound formats, this will place you inside the scene. With its exceptional Atmos mix, the assault scene set to Ride of the Valkyries in Apocalypse Now delivers the overhead thunder of the helicopters. As they veer off and open fire, every chopper and machine gun is placed right where it should be in your room thanks to Atmos and that spatial audio data.
Dolby Atmos isn't the only spatial audio format on the block, though. Another commonly found on Blu-ray cases is DTS: X. It, and all spatial audio formats, work in essentially the same way. Individual sounds like raindrops, gunshots, and even soundtrack elements can be placed precisely inside a 3D space and moved around to match the on-screen action. Many Dolby Atmos systems calibrate themselves at setup by detecting the acoustics of your room. After that, it can project individual sounds around it, including above you. The net result? Enhanced realism and immersion. So, if you’re watching Blade Runner 2049 the rain doesn’t just register as a wall of white noise – it pours from above with individual (tear-like?) drops to be heard. You'll be immersed just as Denis Villeneuve intended.

I'm hoping for an upgrade for the Apple TV 4K media player which will allow for uncompressed passthrough of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X spatial audio. Rumour is that it is coming either as a software update for the present batch of players, or it will be added to the upgrades on the new 2025 model.
