Just some info for any newbies who want to rent movies rather than buy from the Apple TV app.

  1. Open the Apple TV app.
  2. Search for the film that you want to rent.
  3. On the film's page, select the Rent button. If you can't see the option to rent, that film isn't available for renting.
  4. Sign in with your Apple account to rent the film.

You have 30 days to start watching your rental before it's deleted from your Library. After you've started watching, your rental will be available for 48 hours.

I heard that there was a Labour weekend 20% off sale of 4K physical media at JB Hi-Fi NZ so I thought I'd have a browse. I don't buy discs any more, but I'm still interested in what is available.

Wow!, I found these Pre-orders (not in the sale). Back to the Future (1985) 40th Anniversary SteelBook. plus Back to the Future 2 & 3 SteelBooks [$94.98 each], Blade Runner 2049 (2017) SteelBook [$94.98].

The Back to the Future Trilogy is available at $9.99 from the Apple Store and Blade Runner 2049 has been down as low as $4.99. I know from my own past experience that its nice to have a shiny new SteelBook on display, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

Then I got to the sale items. Most titles are twice to four times more expensive than their Apple Store digital namesakes. I'll stick with my $4.99 titles and free 4K upgrades. 😁

You should see the Back to the Future prices at JB AU...

Their standard SteelBook releases equate to about $NZ4 cheaper than JBNZ.

Add a fancy box and lots of other paper and cardboard tat and call it the Collector's Editions, and they magically shoot up to the equivalent of $NZ141 🤑

@Movieman thanks for your work on this thread!

Absolutely appreciated. Started me waiting for the bundle bargains to purchase for watching when completely bored and don’t have data or internet where I am. Discovered I can download them to my device and also shared with family who can also download.

One question, when I download a purchased movie and finish watching it, can I delete it without losing it from my library. I assume so but haven’t tried yet.

Yes, you can safely delete your movie from your device without losing it from your iCloud library.

If you decide to download it again at a later date; locate the film in your library and click on the little cloud icon at the side of it

Films that have previously been downloaded, will have the cloud icon next to them for fast re-download.

There is still no release date for the new Apple TV 4K. Some expect a release sometime before Christmas, whilst others suggest an Autumn 2026 release. It seems that there will definitely be a new model whether this year or next. Personally I want it before Christmas so that I can explain to my wife that it's my annual Christmas present to myself 😁

I already own two 4K models, Generation 1 from 2017 and Generation 2 from 2021. G1 is in my lounge, and G2 in my Man Cave, and they are both rock solid as far as performance goes.

I expect that there are some of you who don't know why I am always raving about these Apple media boxes; Well, as Tina Turner sang, they are "Simply the Best" streaming boxes available. They are more expensive than some others on the market, but if you are serious about streaming from Disney Plus, Netflix, TVNZ+, 3 Now and the Apple TV app, plus others. I am sure that you would really appreciate the performance.

If you have an aging Smart TV that no longer has support for your apps, then an Apple TV 4K will be a lot cheaper than buying a new TV. Just connect it to a spare HDMI port, and you are all set.

The last models were released in 2022. The 64Gb model is Wi-Fi only, and the 128Gb model supports both Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet along with thread networking technology. Both models are also able to stream 4K HDR10+, which previous models could not. All of the previous 4K HDR10 movies in the Apple Store have now been upgraded to 4K HDR10+, which will please recent Samsung Smart TV owners

I have promised my G1 model to my son who is flatting in Christchurch. His Sony 65" TV (also gifted by myself) is starting to age now, and he is keen to have a better streaming experience.

I guess I'll just have to wait, but I'm getting impatient.

Hurry Up Please Smiley

What would make me buy it in a flash is if i could use it to control my tv while im away. Ie. Turn the tv on and off and play movies so house looks lived in. But I don’t think it can do that? I can’t get my HomePod mini to play music when I’m away either.
