cyril7:

Do not these streaming servers present a manifest of various stream rates that the client can select based on buffer/error states, if so could the server not identify clients that will only support 30fps and adjust the manifest offering appropriately? Surely there must be some detail gleened from the client at connection initiation that allows identification of the clients ability.

This is 100% possible, and many services do this.  Although from experience it does require a fair bit of work to implement which can take some time.

You'd think they might have considered this much earlier. Instead, everyone now gets punished for their lack of foresight.

I've been wondering whether they have a partner that has thrown money at them for device support that is stopping them dropping poor performing devices, I mean if yuo where trying to create a top qaulity sport streaming system you'd want the content at its best and you'd limit devices OR offer discounts as part of a bulk purchase not just reduce the quality of your product and expose it to critism...

ALTRON: Is it true that sky sport now display at 60fps?

I believe they have always done 60fps on their streaming app, although now have bumped their resolution to 1080.  They appear to support a comparatively smaller set of devices however.

I suspect given the fact that they need to stream RWC to all of New Zealand that would force a focus on wider device support.  Perhaps something they wouldn't have done if it was just for EPL, Wimbledon, etc.

c0ld: Ok so Ars vs Bur was a fail.

Now watching the Liverpool game. Feel the judder has got much better vs last week.

When it streams well it streams really well - but every few minutes it seems to drop to 144 ish resolution for 5 or so seconds. I've tried different devices but same issue.

Hopefully something that will improve.

I complained to Spark Sport about it, and fair play to them they acknowledged they had issues with some games, and said they are trying to resolve it.

Also gave me a full month credit which was rather unexpected, but most welcome and a nice gesture!

Now I wonder who will improve faster, Spark Sport or Arsenal :)

Arsenal as I don't believe Spark can, otherwise they would have by now.... but then Arsenal have won the first 2 games at the start of the season for the first time in 10y(?) so they'll come unstuck too later on... Probably when spark drop the older devices and run newer ones only...

Didn't see this elsewhere.. but you footy fans weren't alone in noticing

Result of the 'fix' for the last screwups.

"However, following this change, the international distribution network that collects source feeds and shares them to [Spark Sport streaming platform] iStreamPlanet was not correctly configured to receive the number of streams that were being fed to it last night. This caused the issue that customers experienced during the Arsenal v Burnley match."

The same company ( iStreamPlanet) also supplies NBC Sports feed which had absolutely no issues at all , so not sure how accurate that statement is.

In the same vein as  sbiddle opined on twitter, which monkey got loose with the typewriter

"Rugby World Cup: Spark's warning for those planning to use a HDMI cable during streaming"

"There is no way of knowing if a particular cable will work until it's been tested, hence why Spark is urging users who plan to use a HDMI cable to test it on their system before the tournament kicks off on September 20.

Spark is streaming archive footage, player interviews, replays, and the All Blacks squad naming (live) Wednesday week in the lead up to the tournament.

There are alternative ways of streaming the action on the big screen, including if you've got a selected smart TV, or Apple TV."

I assume Spark is talking about HDCP. It isn't anything new https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-bandwidth_Digital_Content_Protection

Basically some of the cheaper cables and even displays might not be HDCP compliant so the source device won't send the signal.

So who would that be? are they passing the buck AGAIN without NAMING who's at fault

Why doesnt Spark have a Dish on Asiasat 5 and take the Live EPL match feeds themselves? you know.. as a backup to their backup backups.

I expect this has fairly limited impact, I have been streaming fine over HDMI from a number of devices.  Has anyone else had any issues?
