My current TV is HDR10+ compatible, and my planned new TCL TV is also HDR10+ Compatible. Problem is, my Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen. isn't.

I was hoping to buy the rumoured 2025 Apple TV 4K model as a Christmas present to myself, but it hasn't materialized and all of the so called Apple insiders have gone AWOL.

The Gen. 3 Apple TV 4K model is compatible with HDR10+, so, should I wait for the rumoured new model or jump in and get the current model?

I doubt that I will be able to tell the difference between HDR10+ and HDR10 or Dolby Vision, but I always like to have the latest technology where possible, just so that I can say that I have it 😁.

Apple have upgraded all of their HDR10 titles to HDR10+ and I have many titles in my Apple Store library which gives me a good reason for upgrading (that's what I tell my wife anyway 😂).

An AI answer to my question.

You should probably wait for the next Apple TV 4K, expected late 2025 or early 2026, as the current 3rd Gen (2022) uses an older A15 chip, and rumors point to a major upgrade (A17 Pro or newer) for potentially console-quality gaming and Apple Intelligence support, making the wait worthwhile for better future-proofing and performance, unless your current streamer is truly terrible and you need a good, ad-free box now

Reasons to Wait:

  • Performance Boost: Rumors suggest a powerful chip (A17 Pro/18) for massive speed increases and AAA gaming.
  • Apple Intelligence: A new chip could enable future AI features, making the device smarter.
  • Better Value: The next model might have a lower starting price, making the current one less appealing.
  • Age: The 3rd Gen's A15 chip is aging, and a refresh is overdue.

The Verdict: If you can hold out a few months and value top performance and future features, wait. If your current device is frustrating and you just want a solid, premium streamer now, the 3rd Gen is a good buy, but expect a new one soon.

Have bout 5x apple TV 4Ks including 1x gen 2 and 1x gen 3. I run the gen 2 and 3 off OLED TVs. To be honest HDR10 itself still looks impressive vs Dolby Vision. The average user with a decent TV probably wouldnt notice the difference with HDR10 vs 10+. Dolby Vision is pretty much the defacto standard for Dynamic metadata formats. HDR10+ has a bit of an uphill battle vs Dolby Vision availability wise but completely understand wanting to have compatibility with all formats. Be interesting to see what future HDR formats like Dolby Vision 2 will do in the coming years?. New TVs etc required. Def wait for the new Apple TV box.

Five Apple TV's! you must be a bigger movie addict than I am 😁

Your analysis of the various HDR options is what I expected was the case. But I still want the ability to access them all 😃

I was reading somewhere that Samsung were the instigators of HDR10+, because of their stance against Dolby Vision. I know that Samsung are reportedly the best selling TV brand, but I never include them in my TV buying options because they don't do DV. I expect that they would sell more of their high end TV's to enthusiasts if they did.

So, most people probably don't give a rats about which format they can access; just as long as it looks good to them. Personally, I just have to have them all 🙂

As a Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie fan; One of my favourite films over the last 10 years is 2019's Alita: Battle Angel. I have watched the film several times and I always enjoy the experience.

Unfortunately, the Robert Rodriguez directed film didn't meet studio expectations at the worldwide Box-Office. It did okay at over US$400 Million, but production costs of around US$170 Million offset that amount. Written and produced by James Cameron, the cyberpunk action film certainly had a good pedigree, but because of it's under-achieving Box-Office result the planned sequel was cancelled, even though the original film only told part of the story.

Available for $7.99 in the Apple Store. DV/DA

Having built up a cult following over the last six years, and that following calling for a sequel, it seems that their calls have been answered.

The UK's Empire Magazine recently interviewed James Cameron and here is a telling statement from the man himself.

“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans,” Cameron told Empire in a brand new interview, answering your reader questions. And he has good news for that loyal throng. “Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”

Good News!

I was browsing Empire Magazine's "50 Best/Iconic Movie Posters Ever" which brought back memories of when I had my Man Cave walls covered in them, several of which are in the top 50.

The iconic Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien, Back to the Future, E.T., The Godfather and Pulp Fiction posters all found a place. But the #1 position was filled by....

"The most iconic poster of all time. Jaws' terrifying image of the great white rising to devour its unwitting victim is a simple, yet inspired piece of visual marketing. From the ridiculously oversized beast, to its gaping jaw filled with rows of jagged, uneven teeth, it’s is a viscerally terrifying image, one that struck fear into the hearts of swimmers everywhere and put people off beaches for a generation."

There's a fantastic John Williams documentary on Disney+ which covers how he came up with the score for Jaws

https://ondisneyplus.disney.com/movie/music-by-john-williams

I recommend even just watching the trailer.

I just noticed that more than half of the movies you mentioned were also scored by John Williams !

James Cameron's recently restored version of his 1997 mega hit; Titanic is available in the Apple Store for a paltry $7.99. The digital version also includes an extras package.

The restored version was not released in NZ on physical media, but JB Hi-Fi imported the UK release and the present asking price is $70.98. This is one of the reasons that I ditched physical media and switched 100% to digital.

I have watched the first 10 minutes of the digital version and it looks fantastic. It also has a Dolby Atmos soundtrack and all for $7.99. It's a no brainer for me.

"James Cameron's Titanic film restoration involved a meticulous, from-scratch process for its 2012 3D conversion and recent 4K remasters, focusing on 4K scanning original negatives, using sophisticated AI/motion estimation for detail enhancement, noise/grain reduction, and creating new Dolby Vision HDR masters, ensuring the film looked pristine for both theatrical re-releases and Blu-ray, with Cameron heavily involved to maintain artistic integrity and bring back the original cinematic experience."

"The result is a visually stunning version of the film that retains its classic feel but with significantly improved clarity, color, and depth, making it look "real" and immersive, even for those who've seen it dozens of times."

THE RUNNING MAN (2025, Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi, 133 mins. R16) • Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos/Dolby Digital 5.1 [Buy - $29.99: Rent - $24.99]

In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television--a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show's charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben's defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite--and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

Quentin Tarantino films, although highly rated by some people, just don't seem to have widespread movie love among film fans. Personally, I have enjoyed all of the Tarantino films, with Kill Bill 1 & 2 being my favourites.

The films were originally filmed and produced as one four hour plus movie, but executive producer Harvey Weinstein suggested that the films be cut into two parts. And that is the way that I have viewed them.

Recently Lionsgate released Tarantino's reconstituted version Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair in US cinemas.

The two films have been sewn together to make for a seamless experience. Some cuts and additions have been made and reportedly for the better. An example is the blood spattered fight scene in a Tokyo night club which were partly in black and white to appease censors, are now in full colour. Tarantino says that there are no plans to release the "Whole Bloody Affair" on disc or digital, but I, for one, hope that he changes his mind. I'm sure that Lionsgate will want to maximise profits.
