I took advantage of the Boxing Day sale today and bought my new Man Cave TV.

I was originally going to buy the TCL C8K 75" model, but after reading many reviews and side-by-side comparisons, it became obvious that the TCL C7K 75" model is the sweet spot between price ($800 cheaper) and performance.

Being in a dark room I didn't need the extra brightness of the C8K (touted to have up to 4500 nits) as the C7K will be more than bright enough at up to 3000 nits. Mini LED backlit TV's are improving annually and contrast is getting very close to OLED quality. I considered sticking with OLED, but I decided that I would prefer the extra brightness to make HDR pop, rather than the slightly better contrast of an OLED.

TCL, like Sony use Google TV as their smart platform and support just about every app I can think of, although I have been using my Apple TV 4K to run my apps, I may try out the TCL platform.

I usually go for one of the "name" TV brands, like Sony or Panasonic (soon to discontinue making TV's), but because reviewers are stating that the C7K is not far behind the Sony Bravia 9, I decided to take advantage of the massive price difference.

The best deal is at Harvey Norman, who matched the lowest price of $2,424.00 at Noel Leeming, plus they gave me a Harvey Norman Gift Card ($242) and free delivery. My wife wants a new Air Fryer, so the Gift Card will go toward that 😁.

The TV was $5,299.00 when it released in June 2025, so it has dropped significantly in price and is widely reported to be one of the best mid to upper tier TV buys of the year.

Delivery is on Monday the 29th. Very much looking forward to catching up on all of the Apple Store films that I haven't watched yet and spending time fiddling with the picture settings 😁

I was browsing the Apple Store Top 100 today. Looking for any bargains that may have been hiding from me.

At #97 was the recently upgraded to Dolby Vision, The Naked Gun Trilogy starring Leslie Nielson as the bumbling Detective, Lt. Frank Drebin. I recently watched the 2025 film starring Liam Neeson as Drebin's son, but, in my opinion, it just didn't have the comedic timing and hilarity that the original trilogy has.

I clicked on the trilogy poster to see how much it was going for and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was only $9.99. The three films have been added to my growing library.

Congrats on the new TV...Lucky guy. What a coincidence. My nephew messaged me the other day regards an 85" C6K TCL. I convinced them(incl his wife)to spend the extra and go for the C7K equivalent at $3200ish. Today i received a pic of his wife standing next to the floor model of the 85C7K at Noel Leeming. They also wanted a Soundbar and was looking at the JBL Bar 500(recommended by Noel Leeming)to go with the TV. Convinced them to spend a little more and get the Bar 1000 MK1 for just over $900 as it was replaced with a MK2 model. Look forward to helping them setup/tweak the settings of the Bar and TV.

I thought that the days of the majestic, sprawling, cinema epic were long gone, but I have just watched an early trailer for Christopher Nolan's 2026 release of The Odyssey, and good news! the epic is back.

I have fond memories of going to the cinema in my youth (when I could sit through a movie without a toilet break), and watching Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, Spartacus and the like. I thought that maybe studios would be loathe to risk the sort of budget needed in today's market. Universal Pictures are the studio supporting the film and the budget is reportedly around the US$250M mark.

An adaptation of Homer's classic tale, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, trying to get home to his wife and son after the Trojan war has ended, encountering many monsters such as Cyclops and Circe and other obstacles along the way. An all star cast includes; Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o.

The film has been shot using new IMAX technology, so the absolute best place to see it will be at an IMAX theatre; Event Cinemas Queen Street Auckland and Queensgate in Lower Hutt.

NZ theatrical release date is 16 July 2026. We can possibly expect it to be available in the Apple Store around November '26.

I've been browsing the worldwide Box-Office returns for 2025, and only two films have broken the US$1 Billion mark and one the US$2 Billion mark.

Lilo & Stitch hit US$1,038,027,526, while Zootopia 2 scored US$1,420,881,406. The two Disney titles were left well behind by the Chinese animated film; Ne Zha 2 with a colossal US$2,150,000,000. Almost all of Ne Zha 2's income was from the Chinese box-office.

Family and animated films once again prove to be gold at the box-office, after 2024 produced two of the three billion dollar takings from Inside Out 2 and Moana 2. The third one was Deadpool & Wolverine, all three are Disney franchises.

All of the films mentioned, except Zootopia 2, are available to buy from the NZ Apple Store. Ne Zha 2 is also available to rent.
