So which soundbar did I end up getting, The JBL Bar 1000MK2 or the Sonos Arc Ultra?

Neither, I ditched them both at the last minute and purchased the Samsung HW Q990F on sale from Harvey Norman. Now... the two week wait for it to arrive 😁

Congrats,im sure you will be impressed once setup in your home theatre. Be interested to hear what you think of that more compact and sealed dual driver subwoofer they use vs the larger ported single driver previous models they used since day dot. JBL have also gone the dual 8" driver single box sub route as well with their flagship model. I do wish that they allowed the option to add another wireless Samsung subwoofer to the mix. The rear speakers are pretty discrete especially when wall mounted. The Samsung bar itself is a solid and heavy affair. They can be wall mounted...like under a wall mounted TV but i assume that would affect the upfiring atmos speakers they have....so probably better on a nice AV cabinet...as close to the front edge as possible. Anyways...congrats again and look forward to your thoughts on it when it turns up.

It actually turned up only two days after I ordered it 😁

I have placed the bar at the front of my AV cabinet. I had nowhere to put the rear speakers, so I bought a pair of speaker stands from PB Tech. They are Brateck stands, very premium looking made from wood and metal and a perfect height for my seating position. I find the rears to be quite loud, but I do have them quite close (recommended by Samsung).

The subwoofer is a compact square design, much smaller than the "D" series woofer, but it can really rumble, more than enough for me.

I have watched at least one film per day since I got the soundbar, it just makes movie watching so much more enjoyable with a decent surround system. I decided to put it through its paces by watching the DV/DA upgraded Apple Store version of Jurassic Park, and it sounded amazing. I could really hear the T-Rex coming from a long way off, and the heavy rain completely immersed me. I started watching the film with the volume at 25/100, but I soon had to turn it down to 18. My Man Cave is quite small, I think the system would perform well in a large room as well.

Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase; soundbars have come a long way since my last one, which was a Sony stand alone model with no sub.

Watching Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves this afternoon. It will be the first 4K disc that I have watched since getting the soundbar.

Occasionally, I like to browse the JB Hi-Fi 4K disc section online. It's pleasing to see that physical media is still well supported by JB in NZ. Many new titles released and a good many more to come, but those prices!

Okay, I get it... If we want an ever decreasing market to be supported, we have to pay for it. But, the difference in price for the Wicked: For Good SteelBook and the standard release, is $42. Admitted, the SteelBook has both the 4K and Blu-ray discs included, while the standard release just has the 4K, but still... $42 difference.

KILL BILL: The Whole Bloody Affair (2026, Action/Thriller, 275 mins. R18) Dolby Vision/Dolby Digital 5.1 [Buy - $24.99]

Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR unites Volume 1 and Volume 2 into a single, unrated epic--presented exactly as he intended, complete with a new, never-before-seen anime sequence. Uma Thurman stars as The Bride, left for dead after her former boss and lover Bill ambushes her wedding rehearsal, shooting her in the head and stealing her unborn child. To exact her vengeance, she must first hunt down the four remaining members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad before confronting Bill himself. With its operatic scope, relentless action, and iconic style, THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR stands as one of cinema's definitive revenge sagas--rarely shown in its complete form, and now presented with a classic intermission.

Two of the films that I have in my Apple library are Fight Club (1999) and The Walk (2015). Fight Club is another of my all-time favourite films.

They are both in 1080p/Dolby Digital 5.1, but hopefully that will change within the next two months.

20th Century Studios are to release Fight Club on 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray disc on May 12th in the US, and Sony Pictures are to do the same with The Walk on May 19th. As Fight Club is connected to Disney, there won't be a physical media release in Australasia.

Both films on disc will be encoded in 4k HDR10/DTS-HD MA 5.1, so we can hope for free upgrades in 4K HDR10+/Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. Fingers crossed 🤞

It would be much better if the Apple TV 4K is given the option to pass through the audio so that we can experience the DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. "I have a dream" 😁

One for Zombie fans. All of the Resident Evil films are being offered at $7.99 each for a limited time. All of the films have Dolby Vision/Atmos on board.

Or buy the box set of the original 6-Movies for $47.94, which equates to $7.99 each as well.

As Home Cinema enthusiasts, we are always looking for the "perfect" film to get the best from our expensive set up. Whether we have a top-of-the-line expensive separates system or a highly regarded soundbar with subwoofer and rears, and  a good 4K TV, we are all looking for that awesome A/V experience that we can use as a demo to "wow" our friends and relatives.  Well, I think I've found mine!

A while ago I picked up Monster Hunter (2020) in an Apple Store sale for $4.99. Since then it's been languishing in my library, completely forgotten about... until today.

Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and starring his wife Milla Jovovich of Resident Evil fame, "Monster Hunter is mostly a mindless blur of action, held together by the slenderest threads of dialogue and plot -- and exactly what many viewers will be looking for." Quote from a Rotten Tomatoes critic.

Synopsis:

Behind our world, there is another -- a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported from our world to the new one, the unflappable lieutenant receives the shock of her life. In a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers and unstoppable, terrifying attacks, Artemis teams up with a mysterious hunter who has found a way to fight back.

From the moment that I pushed the "Play" button on my Apple TV 4K, until I reached the credits; Monster Hunter gave me a Home Cinema experience that I can honestly say " blew me away"   The subwoofer and surrounds were working overtime delivering an amazing sound scape in my small Man Cave, I loved it. The Dolby Vision transfer is one of the sharpest and clear that I have seen   Although the critics score on RT is only at 44%, the Audience score is at 70%. Yes, it is mindless fun, but sometimes these kind of movies just need to be seen... and heard!

I don't suppose that anyone in this thread has an Apple Vision Pro, but if there is, then you can also watch it in 3D, and maybe it's because it was shot in 3D that the video is so good.

As I own this film, I can't see what the current price is in the Apple Store, but Cheap Charts say it's $12.99. Perhaps wait until it drops to $4.99 again, or even a $0.99 rental.
