Lots of new announcements and releases from Apple this week, but still no sign of the 4th Generation Apple TV 4K.

Normally I would just wait patiently for release day, but I have just moved my Homepods into my living room and the Apple TV 4K that I have there is the 1st Generation and is not compatible with my Homepods.

My wife and I usually watch a film in the living room at the weekends as my wife doesn't like the surround sound in my Man Cave. Although we are using the Homepods to play our radio station of choice (Breeze Classic) and tracks from Apple Music, I need to pair them with a compatible Apple TV 4K so that we can use them for the audio when watching our weekend movie.

The Homepods give a wonderful front sound stage, but very little surround effects, which is what my wife prefers.

I'm sure that I would be happy with the 3rd Generation Apple TV 4K, but having heard all the rumours about a new model arriving soon; I decided to hold off.

Now that I have posted here about the unavailability of the new model, it's likely that an announcement will be made in the coming days, just to keep me happy 😁

EDIT: I have just read that the 4th Generation Apple TV 4K is expected to be released along with tvOS 26.4 at the end of March.

Apple TV 4K tips: For New Users.

Have you ever thought that your Apple TV 4K app screen is far too bright, and would you like it to be more "natural" looking, then read on.

Go to Settings and choose the Video & Audio section. Go into Format, and select 4K SDR

Then go into Match Content and turn on Match Dynamic Range.

Now your app screen will be much easier on your eyes, and because you have turned on Match Dynamic Range your movie will play in whatever the main format is (Dolby Vision, 4K HDR or 4K SDR).

You can also force Dolby Vision, 4K HDR10 or 4K SDR etc. to be on by default, by selecting one of them in Format. You would then need to make sure that Match Dynamic Range  is turned off.

The first option (4K SDR with Match Dynamic Range on) is the recommended setting, but you may like to have a play with option two... you won't break anything 😁.

Have fun!

tvOS 26.4:

Source: T3

Three new features and changes will arrive on Apple TV 4K with tvOS 26.4, currently in beta.

Continuous Audio Connection: The feature is designed to address sound issues some Sonos users have experienced when using their speakers with AV receivers.

New subtitle styles: There is a new Style menu that lets you switch between Classic, Large, Text, Outline Text, and Transparent Background. There is also a ‘Manage Styles’ button that will enable you to create your own custom subtitle style. It's worth mentioning that while this will work for any app that uses the default tvOS video player, it won’t work for streaming apps that use their own video player.

Removal of the iTunes and Movies standalone apps. We'll finally be saying goodbye to the standalone iTunes and Movies apps with the tvOS 26.4 update. Most of the apps’ functionality is now baked into the Apple TV app, but it is recommended that if you have anything on your Wish List, you should save those items to the TV app’s Watchlist instead. The Wish List feature will be discontinued when the final software arrives.

For now, tvOS 26.4 remains in beta, and it's not yet clear exactly when it will land as a final build. Hopefully, it won’t be too far away.

As most of the people in this thread probably use Cheap Charts for information on price drops, I suggest that anyone who buys movies from the Apple Store and haven't signed up to Cheap Charts yet, would enjoy using the app and getting ALL of the price drops, instead of the few that I post in this thread.

As Apple seem intent on removing the Wish List from their Apple TV app and deleting it from the almost dead iTunes app, Cheap Charts is an excellent choice. Reduced price titles that you have in your Wish List will receive an alert by email.

Also, if you enter your library through "my purchases" you should receive automatic alerts when one of your films is upgraded to 4K. I haven't entered my library yet, so I'm not sure if it works.

Their are lots of other features in the app, and its a must-have for any Apple Store movie buyers (or renters).

From today, I will let the app do the job of informing you of price drops, but I'll continue posting news and snippets of interest moving forward.

Cheers

Apple TV 4K tips: For New Users.

This tip is for the "black bar" haters. You know, those black bars at the top and bottom of your TV screen on 90% of movies.

This is an easy way to remove the black bars when watching on an Apple TV 4K.

Make sure that you have Tap to Zoom Video turned on. To check this, go into Settings>Video and Audio look for Tap to Zoom Video and make sure that it is turned on.

  • While watching a video, double-tap (don't click) the center of the clickpad or touch surface on your Siri Remote.
  • This will zoom the video to fill the entire screen, effectively removing horizontal or vertical black bars.
  • Double-tap again to revert to the original aspect ratio.
  • Zooming to fill the screen crops the edges of the picture. You will lose visual information on the sides (for horizontal bars) or the top/bottom (for vertical bars).
  • Filmmakers often use wider aspect ratios (like 2.39:1) that are wider than a standard 16:9 TV, which is why black bars appear by design to show the full frame.
  • Many TVs have their own "Aspect Ratio," "Wide," or "Screen Fit" buttons on their original remotes that can override the signal to stretch or zoom the image.

This method reportedly works on apps within the Apple TV app, but is unlikely to work on stand-alone apps such as Netflix, Disney+ etc.

I have tried it only on my iTunes/Apple Store movie library... and it works well

!

It was interesting to browse the 3D titles available on Cheap Charts. Far more than I realised, of which I have 98 titles already in my library. I would love to watch those titles in 3D, but how many users can actually watch in 3D? To answer my own question; Not many.

To watch 3D through your  Apple TV 4K, you need to be the "proud" owner of the Apple Vision Pro headset, which will set you back US$3500 or about NZ$8000 if you can find a set here. The 2nd generation headset was released in mid 2025, but didn't address the main complaint of the weight of the headset, which becomes a bit of a pain when worn for a period of time. The 2nd generation did make the headset more comfortable to wear, and there are upgraded apps and software, but not a major update.

Reportedly there are early adopters in the US, with many of them suffering from buyer remorse. So, it seems that users would be well advised to leave well alone... for now anyway.

Price and weight are going to keep the Apple Vision Pro headset firmly in the "niche product" category, so, for now, my 3D titles will have to reside in the "maybe someday" category.

Or maybe connect the AppleTV box to an older (2010's) TV capable of displaying 3D? I wonder how these would work with 3D content played on the AppleTV.

On a slight tangent, I finally picked up a 2nd hand Sony home theatre system that was 3D capable, and connected it to a 2011 40" Samsung LED TV that had the 3D feature. Played The Hobbit 3D version from Blu-ray and was really impressed by how immersive it was.  Alot of that is down to Peter Jackson and his many teams, but otherwise I think it's a shame that TV manufacturers gave up on 3D, and could surely have kept it as just another alternative feature and not leant on it so much as a selling feature.

@Movieman Thanks for the tip about buying 3D on the iTunes Store, I hadn't thought of it. Can you recommend any good movies? I think probably Avatar would have to be one of my first picks.

Unfortunately the 3D films in Apple's library are designed specifically for the Apple Vision Pro, and are impossible to play any other way.

I did have a 3D setup a few years ago and was mainly underwhelmed by the technology, although some films were very good (mainly animation). I thought that TV makers were too quick to pull the plug on 3D and I believe that further development would have been beneficial. I saw Avatar (2009) at the cinema and wore the 3D glasses they provided. I thought that it was a good, if novel experience. I also saw Gravity (2013) at the IMAX theatre at Darling Harbour in Sydney, which was probably the best 3D I have seen. Other than those two, there are not many 3D movies that stand out in my memory.

I still have about 30 Blu-ray 3D films in my physical media collection.

BLUE MOON (2025, Comedy/Drama, 100 mins. M) Dolby Vision/Dolby Digital 5.1 [Buy - $14.99: Rent - $14.99]

...You know how in marriage they say "for better or for worse"? I think, in terms of my life, I have entered the "for worse" part, and it happened so quietly I didn't even recognize it. Richard Linklater's Blue Moon tells the story of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart bravely facing the future as his professional and private life unravel at the opening night party for his former partner's hit show Oklahoma! By the time this night is over, Hart will have confronted both a world that no longer values his talent and the seeming impossibility of love.

INFUSE MEDIA PLAYER

      for Apple devices

When I decided to go 100% digital after many years of collecting physical media, I made digital copies of my favourite films. Putting them onto hard drives and plugging the hard drives into my TV USB port was the way that I originally watched them. Then I discovered the Infuse Media Player, a free app for playing and cataloguing your digital collection. It's for Apple users only, and can be installed on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV 4K, Mac and Vision Pro headset.

The current version is 8.3.9 which was released on February 24 2026. The app is available to download from the Apple app store. There is also the Pro version which costs $16.49 annually. While the free version plays many codecs, the Pro version plays and decodes just about anything you throw at it, and is definitely worth subscribing to if you want the best experience.

I store my Blu-ray files on a Seagate Iron Wolf Pro 20 Tb internal hard drive in my PC, and stream directly from it to the Infuse app on my Apple TV 4K. I have just about digitized all of the films that I want out of my collection, but may go through it and select a few more as I have over 10 Tb of space left on my hard drive 😁. There are tutorials on how to set up Infuse on the web, so you just need to search for it. Firecore, the creators of the software, have their own website which includes a forum for users to ask questions etc.

It's a brilliant program for Apple users and does an amazing job of  automatically organizing your media with metadata and artwork. Connects to Mac, PC, NAS, Plex, Emby, Jellyfin and Cloud services (Dropbox, Google Drive and One Drive).

Infuse 8
