The answer is kangaroo, the BBC/ITV/Channel 4 player that was forced out of the market by the British Commerce/Pollies and which has now passed into private hands. Dam shame that

Just out of sheer curiosity, did anyone else get "double charged"? I have the $18.49 charge plus an additional $0.01 charge for some reason! I'm not complaining, just wondering :)

I've been thinking about this since long before it was announced and while I've signed up for the trial and I would really like Quickflix to succeed, here's why I think it probably won't:

Lack of in demand content due to Sky licensing deals, especially HBO and Sports
Not having content in a timely manner, who wants to wait for Game of Thrones a year after it has aired in the US?
Not enough support on TV connected devices (Only PS3 and Sony Bravia TVs currently)
Data caps (Only Slingshot and Orcon are unmetered)
New Zealanders on average are pretty stupid/ignorant of technology (Geekzone is not an indication of the average NZer)

Notice that I didn't put piracy in there as for most people this isn't a consideration, and studies have shown that piracy decreases when reasonably priced legitimate services are available.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

What about the rest of the networks? ABC, CBS, Fox, CW, BBC? HBO is only one. Sports ESPN?

I've never held much sway with this argument personally, apart from competition based shows, but I guess that's me.

I agree with this one...quicker they can roll it out to devices the better

Personally not the be all end all, anyone doing netflix via vpn, or hulu via vpn or itunes, or torrenting has the same issue. Granted streaming is a bit more of a problem for "reuse of media" but that's a mental shift needed. Also I believe once the content is there, the datacaps will follow, or people will migrate to those ISPs with unmetering....

This is why it needs to be on devices. You hear of all sorts of types, that are into torrenting etc, why because it's so simple, and so easy...That and TVNZ Ondemand/TV3 Ondemand. Just so they can watch when they want (A smart person would record it as it doesn't costs data...)
But we need to give them a chance, we've all been bitching there is nowhere legal to get our content, so we shouldn't dismiss them out of hand on their 2nd day.

netflix/vudu/itunes dont have these, if you thinking of it as a replacement for sky, its not. its a replacement for united video etc, a video store that streams everything online

once again, not what this is, its a netflix type service, netflix never has anything until its been released on DVD and usually about a month after that has happened

this is critical, netflix is doing so well because of so many devices supporting it.
they would go a long way if they got HD (SD isnt enough) on xbox and ps3s. and if they partnered with apple on the ATV, they could advertise a device for $159 that will work with this service.

i think they are doing pretty well here tbh, 2 or 3 ISPs are already partnered with them, if you want this service, its not difficult switching ISPs, and most users probably wont use more than 30GB a month on this service (i use less than that on netflix/hulu a month)

the same could be said about netflix, if you get a device that just works, eg ps3, xbox, ATV or if its built into TVs i dont think this will be a problem. but if you have to do a lot of steps to get it to work, then that might be an issue. but they can streamline all those issues.

they may in the future decide to do what vudu is doing and selling/renting latest episodes of tv shows as a PPV type, but the core of the business seems to be the netflix business, monthly subscription for our movie/tv show catalogue.
and netflix have proven that business model works.

Nope, but I contacted them about being charged the $18.49 because of my own failure to enter the 21 days free promo code, and they refunded the $18.49, and I guess will recharge it at the end of the 21 days.

Personally I'd love to give this a go, it is definitely a step in the right direction, and is well overdue. Sure, there are some issues, but it can only get better.

Only thing holding me back is that this year is 'get rid of credit card debt' year, so I'd need another payment method. The FAQ says Paypal is an option, but there only seems to be cc offered when I try to sign up. So unless they sort this out, I'll have to keep away.

Thanks for the reply :) it's good to hear counter-arguments.

Regarding other networks, I wasn't mentioning other names as the list can be exhaustive but I can see them having a problem getting content from most US networks at a profitable price. I may be wrong however and only time wil tell. Regarding ESPN, pretty sure most NZers aren't too interested in stuff airing on that and they typically just want to watch whatever NZ involved rugby game is occurring

The argument about being able to watch shows quickly after they air mainly applies only to people who care about when shows are airing in the US and feel cheated that they can't watch those shows legitimately without waiting a long time.

The datacaps thing is possibly more of a problem for low income families who only pay for 5-10GB a month of data but they have Sky TV. A mentality change would be required here. I also think there are several ISPs who have deals with Sky and so won't offer unmetered access to competing services like Quickflix.

I've tried TVNZ On Demand on my PS3 and the quality was so abysmal I never wanted to try again. I think general public are more inclined to record a show. Streaming what you want, when you want is a completely different mindset to what the average NZer is used to and many people won't even be interested in this.

I wonder, as I agree with reven, netflix is essentially dvd based, seasons are not up to date (US netflix is up to season 6 of how I met your mother for example, currently airing is most of the way through Season 7).

Does that leave room for a tv streaming service? (similar vein to hulu) - but I suspect that would have more issues that quickflix for getting content.

Ask your bank if they offer Debit cards? (Kiwibank does Visa Debit, works just like a CC, except you nominate an account that it uses money out of. I have a separate account just for my debit card)

They documented the $0.01 charge for me pretty well, all it is a hold to verify that the card exists it's not actually a charge, (i.e. $0.01 "hold" verifies card exists, they instantly release the hold, they put in a second charge for the full $18.49). Some banks don't show the holds as transactions until they are actually billed for (but still deduct 1 cent from the open credit limit until all the release is final), some will show it as a pending transaction, and some *cough*Prezzy Card/NZ Post* really don't make it clear one way or another.

i doubt nz will get a service similar to hulu (or hulu itself) in the near future, tv stations in nz have deals to air the show first before we can stream them online. this is the biggest hurdle.

they might be able to have "Exclusive to Quickflix" shows, which hulu do aswell, where they are only available on that service. this could actually work, there are many shows that never make it to NZ that are great (just watched "Endgame" on hulu exclusive, was good, hoping for a season 2).

if quickflix get enough market share, then they will more likely be able to offer more recent tv episodes, i think they were hoping for 20% by 2016, so i think it will be a few years off before we see anything other than a few tv shows during their current season. but we should see a large collection of old tv shows, eg buffy, firefly, battlestar, doctor who, torchwood, taxi etc.

I honestly don?t see datacaps as a major issue here, even without unmetering.

If you think of this as being a replacement for Sky, well then you have just saved yourself $60+. Use just half of that to upgrade your datacap and this will give you probably 50+GB ? enough for 50 movies a month, which is absolutely heaps ? almost two movies per day! Freeview will take care of the rest of your viewing ? news, bit of sport, live stuff etc

If you think of it as being in addition to sky, well then you will probably only watch 2-3 movies per week, which equates to only 10-15GB/month, which is well within the datacaps of most people.

If you think of it as a replacement for torrenting, then it will probably use LESS data than torrenting because it only uses data for stuff you actually watch, as opposed to the stuff you torrent but never watch, or the datacap you use on upload when torrenting (which can be huge if you seed a bit)
