BEN HUR (1959)

Source: Empire

Everything about Ben-Hur is big. William Wyler’s 1959 adaptation of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel had – at the time of its production – the largest budget of any film, totalling over $15 million. It had gigantic sets, teeming with thousands of extras. It was shot on super-wide Panavision 65mm film, a vast cinematic canvas. And its story is an all-out odyssey – told across nearly four hours, including an overture, interval, and entr’acte – in which Charlton Heston’s Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur is wrongly accused of attempting to kill a Roman governor, is forced into slavery, sails across oceans, becomes a champion chariot driver, and goes in search of his long-lost family. All that, and it’s all set against the backdrop of the life of Jesus – making it a true Biblical epic. Now, for the first time, you can watch Ben-Hur in stunning 4K Ultra-HD.

It’s a film that every cinephile should experience – a shining example of the kind of historical opus that Golden Age Hollywood was founded on. It was very much intended that way; Ben-Hur had already been adapted as a 1925 silent film, and studio MGM imagined that making a new version could be a chance to outdo 1956 smash The Ten Commandments, even going so far as to cast that film’s Moses, Heston himself, in the lead role. It worked: Ben-Hur won 11 Oscars, made almost 10 times its huge budget on initial release, and earned rave reviews from critics too.

Ben Hur is available to purchase or rent from the Apple TV app. It has been down as low as $4.99 to buy.

The digital version includes Dolby Vision-Atmos, and also has ❇️iTunes Extras.

Speed Racer (2008) has been upgraded to Dolby Vision

Speed Racer has also had Dolby Atmos added yesterday. It took a month after it was originally upgraded to Dolby Vision, but better late than never.

I decided to watch Speed Racer, which I bought for $4.99 when it was still in HD. I knew that it was getting a new 4K physical media release and I assumed that the digital version would get upgraded to 4K also.

With the announcement yesterday that Dolby Atmos has been added to the already upgraded Dolby Vision visuals, I found the film in my library, but when I played it, it was still playing back in HD/Dolby Digital Plus.

I was angry and after a rant in this thread (which I have now deleted), I began to investigate why.

So here is the simple way to get it to play in DV/DA. I went into the Apple TV app store and searched for the film. I found it, and it was tagged as DV/DA, then I clicked on the listing, and played it from there in glorious DV/DA.

Many of you may know about this glitch, but for those who don't... I hope that this helps.

All of the individual Despicable Me and Minions animated films are reduced to $9.99.

A better deal is the Despicable Me: 6-Movie Collection for $39.99 ($6.66 each) which includes the four Despicable Me movies, plus Minions and Minions: The Rise of Gru.

I finally watched the 4K upgrade of Speed Racer. A 2008 live action version of a 1960's Japanese Anime film series, which is an absolutely glorious Audio/Video experience. It's certainly the sort of film that you either love or hate (I loved it), but the Home Cinema experience on a good setup is awesome.

Dolby Vision-Atmos

Lilly and Lana Wachowski bring a classic anime to the big screen: Matthew Fox, John Goodman, Christina Ricci and Susan Sarandon star with Emile Hirsch as Speed Racer! Fearlessly hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition in his thundering Mach 5, Speed Racer was born to race cars. But when Speed turns down a lucrative offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner but uncovers a terrible secret--some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls! The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game.

Yeah, it's not a film for purists, but it's a lot of fun if you don't delve too deeply into it, and this new updated version is just incredible to watch and listen to. My wife even commented on how colourful it is (a bit like setting your TV to Vivid mode), and she doesn't usually notice different picture qualities.

Watched on my 2025 TCL C7K 75" QD Mini LED TV connected to a Samsung HW Q990F Soundbar

This film is regularly available from the Apple TV app store for $4.99.

Concert/Documentary films are popular with music fans. Rotten Tomatoes have a list of the 66 best concert films of all time. The #1 film of this type on their list is:-

Jonathan Demme's 2023 40th Anniversary, 4K restoration of Stop Making Sense, a live performance shot over three nights at Hollywood's Pantages theatre in December of 1983 and released in 1984, and features Talking Heads most memorable songs performed by the brilliant, versatile and eccentric David Byrne, with band members; Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz, accompanied by a host of top musicians of their time, this concert rocks.

While I was aware of Talking Heads in the 80's, I never really took time to listen to their music. I did know of some of their most popular titles such as Psycho Killer, Burning Down the House, Road to Nowhere and Once in a Lifetime; So, after reading some rave reviews on the film, I decided to purchase it from the Apple TV app store when it dropped to $9.99 for a short spell ($19.99 presently). It sat neglected in my digital library for several months, before I finally gave it a whirl last week.

From the moment David Byrne walks on to a bare stage with a portable cassette tape player and an acoustic guitar, to introduce us to Psycho Killer; to the stage full of musicians playing and singing Girlfriend is Better and Take Me to the River; I enjoyed every moment.

Unfortunately, there are no extras on the digital release, but we do get Dolby Vision-Atmos. Turn this thing up LOUD, and be entertained 🎸

We are almost into June, and still no film has hit the magical box-office worldwide US$1 Billion mark. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie [$34.99/$29.99] made a valiant attempt, falling just over US$15 million short. Michael is still showing in cinemas, but is starting to lose traction at US$800 Million. Project Hail Mary [$19.99/$24.99. It's not a misprint; the buy price is cheaper than the rental for now) and The Devil Wears Prada 2 have been very successful, both well over the US$600M mark.

From June 4th onwards, there are several potential billion dollar films hitting cinemas, Masters of the Universe, Disclosure Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. all seemingly have the potential to crack the big B, but one thing is certain; we can look forward to watching them all at home, courtesy of the Apple TV app store.

Yes. Disclosure Day will be on Apple. It doesn’t start it’s theatrical run until June 11th, so it’s probably a bit early for the pre-order yet.

Sometimes films just release without a pre-order option, but I don’t think that will be the case for DD.
