Variety

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has finally been unveiled to members of the film press, who are calling the Oscar winner’s adaptation of Homer’s epic a “staggering achievement” with “flawless filmmaking.” It appears Nolan has another huge hit on his hands.

“A filmmaking feast,” wrote Collider’s Peri Nemiroff. “A grand and gripping rendition of Homer’s epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan. It’s sincerely hard to imagine any other filmmaker on the planet being able to bring that source material to screen with this much scale, scope and heart.”

Well, it seems that The Odyssey is going to be a massive hit for Universal Pictures and Christopher Nolan. I hope that film goers support the film, and that it makes a billion dollars at the worldwide box-office. Always an innovator, Nolan absolutely deserves success with this film, just for the scale of it. I just wish that we had an IMAX theatre in Christchurch, as the film needs to be seen on the largest screen available. I still might make the effort to see it at a cinema nearby. If I do it will be the first film that I will have seen at the cinema since Avatar 3D (2009). The official run time is 2:52, a long time between comfort breaks. 😟

Just read that Supergirl will be released on digital on July 28th, only 32 days after its theatrical release.

i knew that it wasn’t doing too well at the box-office, but 32 days is not long for a film expected to do well.

Sign of the times?

I've read a lot of comments and they seem to be split between people who loved the film and people who hated it. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

I'll certainly give it a watch when it is released digitally, which is July 28th by all accounts.

Of course Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch it for free later in the year.

For those who don't have a Dolby Atmos set up; is it worth the cost of upgrading from your 5.1 or 7.1 system?

Well, I certainly aren't going to push you one way or the other. I did have a reasonably expensive Dolby Atmos/DTS:X setup. Two speakers installed in the ceiling, a Yamaha receiver, subwoofer etc. I have since sold off my separate components (ceiling speakers are redundant, but still up there) and bought a Samsung HW-Q990F 11.1.4. Which has surround speakers and a subwoofer. That model has now been superseded by the "H" series, but there are deals available right now on the "F" series (Noel Leeming $1499) and I expect that there will be a minimal difference between the two.

Many "Atmos" encoded films are amazing to listen to, with lots of overhead sounds filling out the soundstage, but there are just as many that hardly use the overhead channels, So, should you splash your cash on a Dolby Atmos system? I suggest that you read as many articles on the subject from "experts" in the audio field before making a decision.

I do have an Atmos favourite, which is absolutely outstanding; the first 10 minutes of Unbroken (2014) is the best that I have heard. Unfortunately you will need to buy the Blu-ray to hear the Atmos track.

FWIW: There are two IMAX theatres in NZ, both in the North island, (Queen St- AKL and Queensgate-WLG)  But, they are Digital, not Film.

Australia have 9 Imax theatres, but only 1 ( Melbourne) is Film , all the others are digital - like the NZ ones.

Amadeus (4K, theatrical cut) is down to $4.99 today, but sods law it's treated as a separate movie from the HD version, so if you own the HD version, you will need to buy it again if you want it in 4K.

This really grinds my gears when this happens.

Interestingly my email receipt from Apple in 2023 shows I purchased the Directors Cut version, which can no longer be found in the movie store. Even clicking on the 'Write a review' link in the email results in:

"Item not available. The item you've requested is not currently available in the New Zealand store."
