Also, satellite signals are generally around 10 seconds behind live due to the time it takes for the radio signals to make the round trip to the satellite and back (about 5 seconds each way).

nope. it take less than a second for satellite signal to go there and back.

only has to travel 35,786 km to the satellite and 35,786 km back + the distance to the ground station. signal travels at the speed of light which is 299,792 kilometers per second

ive used many satellite connections with pings less than 800ms.

I was wondering as well, when I read about the 10 secs delay. I’ve been to quite a few games at stadiums, where they also had the game running on Sky Sport (in the bar areas etc). Definitely not a 10 sec delay. More like a second if that.

Really? I was talking with Kordia last year and they were predicting a 10 second round trip for anything going via satellite for our particular use case. Weird.

Yep and I could see that it was the actual Sky Sport signal, as it had the logo and also commercials running during halftime. If I looked at the pitch and then at the screen, the delay was minimal (less than a second).

Interesting, I’ll have to bring this up with my satellite friends next time I see them :) Sorry for the confusion guys.

Would the video feeds inside the stadium not be direct from the OSB truck then through RF modulator/sender for internal distribution or something like that?

But would commercials then also be shown?
Basically identical feed to the one you would watch at home.

I am having some trouble with watching live and skipping around in the stream. It seems like I can move forward until I "catch up" but from that point onward, I am "caught up" and can't move forward, even if I pause replay and then go make a coffee or put the kids to bed. I can't move forward again.

The only way I have been able to resolve this, is to exit the stream and then go back in again, which is a pain!

Anyone else experiencing this? Both my devices are Android.

Settle down, children!

I'm guessing the feed fps is whatever the source fps is. End of story. I think it is that simple, really.

And of course there will be a disconnect between the engineers and the Webmaster. Why do you think fly buys sold iPhone 11s for 200 bucks? Coz the stock manager didn't know how much they cost? If course not. The web page typist randomly typed some digits.

Same with spark sport.

Couple of general questions that Spark could answer that would help the situation

1) Does Spark re-encode at the same framerate as it recieves it, i.e. UK sport will generally be at 50fps?

2) If so, does the spark sport app match the TV framerate to the content framerate?

My feelings are that while the content is sent out at the correct framerate unless your device (Matt H's addon via Kodi) autoswitches the framerate there will often be a disconnnect between panel framerate and content framerate... My TV is set to 60Hz as its default and when watching Sky via Kodi the framerate switches to 50 to match content so everything is good... But spark sport doesn't so content lower than 60 will often play wrong with judders etc.  I wonder how many people have their TVs set at a different rate to the content and this is the cause of some of their annoyances.

1. From what Troy said, the feed from the source is 60fps, it plays at 50fps. Im sure Spark doesn't encode, this is all done by iSP.

2. In my case the Spark app has no way to match frame rate. I use an ATV4, the TVoS app just plays. The ATV4 has a setting to set frame rate, mine is 1080/50. There is a setting to match fps to the TV I have that off. Everything in NZ is 50Hz, so everything should be fine, as it is. For TV's I'm unsure, interested to know if the SS app controls that, to bypass any oddball user settings, and ensure its 50Hz

I can say for certain that the Spark Sport app on Android TV does not change the frequency of the TV to match the content... so if the TV is set to 60Hz and its playing at 50Hz (and vice versa) the display will be odd.  The problem is that Spark are stating that everything can be upto 60fps but not saying what content actually is running at... A simple frameswitch in the app would probably solve so many of the complaints.

With respect to the 50/60 issue, Plasma TVs default to 60Hz and do not work well for static content at 50 or lower rates, makes them look odd.. e.g. my nVidia Shield on my cheap Veon LCD looks fine at any rate but the Samsung Plasma with the shield looks has a crap ui look at 50hz, however the content will play fine as long as it matches the tv frequency.

I have seen both 50fps and 60fps content on platform, so I would suspect they encode at the source frame rate.  Worth noting that for RWC the source is TVNZ so probably getting a 25i output from them and encoding at 50p.

Yep :-) I was kinda aluding to some of this in the questions... What Spark Sport need to do is build in framerate switchers (like Kodi has) in to the apps so that the content comes through at its native rate rather than a mismatch.  Imagine the confusion for a 25i reencoded to 50p playing back on a 60p display.

If I turn on match frame rate and range on my Apple TV4K it switches from 50Hz to 60Hz. Is that bad?

No aslong as the content playing is encoded at 50fps rather than 60fps... So, the rugby should be at 50hz and F1 should be at 60hz... if you've got access to them both it would be useful to try and see if switches correcly.  Kodi does this for me if I use Matts addon but I do not have a RWC pass so can't check that out.

No I don’t have access to F1. But as stated, for the rugby the TV switches from 50Hz to 60Hz. So the rugby must be at 60fps?
