RWC is 50fps and F1 is 60fps; so your tv is doing its own smoothing to deal with the mismtach in framerate to frequency... If there is a mismatch then there could be jitters like there is on my Samsung Plasma.

RWC is 60 according to   https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=151&topicid=248913&page_no=73#2328871

That being the case, RWC and F1 are 60, ATV4 is 50 as per my default setting. Is the smoothing on my TV occuring all the time or ONLY if there is a mismatch

When smoothing is on, its good. The ball if panning and distant, can show multi images. Closer up its fine. If I turn smoothing off, that ball is better, but I feel the players are not as silky smooth. Its subtle, but I notice it. Its not jitter, its like micro jitter, but I can detect it. Possibly a placebo going on there too.

RWC cannot be at 60fps naturally in NZ as it is converted by TVNZ (as recieving broadcast partner) and converted to 25i for terrestrial distribution, unless this is only occuring for those being shown on terrestrial OTA TV and the rest are passed directly on to Spark Sports encoding partner in the US?

This is exactly what I'm trying to get to the bottom of in the other thread (and both of these threads are now very similar).

TVNZ post production and broadcast is all 25/50 and it leaves TVNZ as a 50 FPS feed yet yet Spark are broadcasting at 60Hz. The big question is why.

@sbiddle - yep I know, I was trying to anchor technology questions in here and leave the RWC thread for issues related to the RWC...

From the other thread I said this today

Its a crazy old thing this. Catching up F1 today. F1 apparently runs at 60fps but its all a tad confusing. However, i thought I'd do a test. My Old but awesome Panny plasma, paired with ATV4. ATV4 is set at 1080/50 so I set it at 1080/60 and it tells me its now switched the TV to 1080/60. Is there jitter? Not really, but its not smoooooth. Its not jittering, its not micro pausing, its just not butter smooth.  So popped it back to 1080/50, its BUTTER SMOOTH

Ill do the same on an OD RWC later today. And while the RWC has been a non event with too many minnows games I will watch AUS and ENG tonight, so will see how live goes at 50 and 60 as well as OD

Watching RWC now, its the same. 50Hz here is what is butter smooth. Seeing grass artifacts again, not bad but not noticeable. F1 is better. The difference between F1 and RWC is whoever is recording in Japan, the other components are the same

Spark nabbing the rights is the rumour. Sky still have australian rights for 6 years.

We're entering an odd time for sports fans. In the short term it's going to probably cost a lot more to watch all the games + sports people are used to

Spark is pleased to announce that from April 2020, Spark Sport will be the official rights partner for all New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) matches played in New Zealand, with TVNZ joining as the free-to-air partner for a selected number of T20 International and Super Smash matches.
The rights period is for six years and includes all international and selected domestic cricket matches played in New Zealand under the umbrella of NZC. This includes:
• All Blackcaps and White Ferns matches played in New Zealand;
• All Men’s and Women’s Super Smash matches (including semi-finals and final);
• The Ford Trophy final;
• The New Zealand Cricket Awards.

Right now its not a lot more its $20 If the sports stay between these two players, it will remains at $20, although if SparkSport keep adding sports the sub has to increase

(To the tune of Papa Roach, Last Resort)

Fragmentation, wallet bleeding - so many services I'll have to be keeping...

But in all seriousness that's a pretty big deal, and long term too. I guess Sky will still have international rights. Or except for in India where we'll have to buy the stream direct from BCCI? 😶 It's the way of the future. 😑

On topic

I cant do SkySportNow. Second time I've tested based on positive comments about Bathurst

Its good as gold on my two iPads. I have flicked though Golf, Rugger, NRL, Cricket and on Sky its great as usual. On SSN its still got that super annoying look.Sharp, but any panning, or any movement is like its 1080/20.This is on ATV4 app

However, Bathurst is much better. There is background panning which isnt great, but the cars and the road are all very good, so the bathurst feed is much closer to Sky than the other channels Ive tested today. If I gave Sky 9.5/10 Id give Bathurst on SSN a very solid 8 and the other channels 6.

The lack or near lack of replays is a deal breaker for SSN, but even if that wasnt the case i'd rather pay full for Sky. If all channels were like Bathurst feed, and full replays I'd use SSN, but it fails on both

 Spark Sport is clearly better than SSN

Is it just me, F1 quali seems sharper and smoother? It looks nigh on perfect. It always looks really good, but quali just seems 11/10. It like that went from 50fps to 70.

I wonder if Spark Sport is considering some late tournament pricing, e.g. to match the super early bird pass. I imagine that they could pick up a lot of subscribers including myself who didn't want to deal with potential hassles but are happy to join now most of the troubles are resolved.

I'm not paying $24.99 a game nor $89.99 but would pay $59.99 for the convenience of watching the last games when I want.

@Hammerer I would also pay to watch the games but not the pricing they want
