I have elderly relatives who still can't cope with switching TV inputs from the DVD player to the satellite box and back again. I have to (literally) write down instructions including pictures of which buttons to press etc in a notebook for them. Then I still have to provide phone support when they forget how, get confused, or press a button on the TV remote that does something random and they can't get the news back, or get a rain fade message or whatever.
There may be an opportunity here for an enterprising geekzoner. A basic media front end/STB that football lovin' geezers can plug and play would be pretty popular, I'd imagine (a "six-yard box", if you will). Maybe something based on a Raspberry Pi (I think a Raspberry Pi would handle the decoding?).

Not for a while, if ever. Sky currently hold those rights and are running around at the moment telling media that A-League games get more viewers than EPL ones, so I can't see sky looking to lose those anytime soon.

I'm not so sure. Epl is definitely better football and more widely followed, but almost all the live games are at times that people often can't or won't watch tv because they are asleep or at work, and recording to watch it later just isn't the same.
So it wouldn't surprise me if a league is more watched in NZ, purely because those games are on at times people actually want to watch tv.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but are the people interested in ditching Sky for this in relationships etc? I say this because I could easily afford to pay for multiple sports through this route if I didn't have a partner that wanted movies and general TV such as Soho etc. Despite her complaining at the price of Sky, she doesn't want to loose access to general TV or the movies so that still requires me to have Sky...

Get unblock-us.com. Problem solved, you can access netflix, Hulu, BBC I player etc and get all the general tv you want, and if you want game of thrones, there is always pirate bay
Also general tv is mostly free to air anyway, which obviously you still have access to if you ditch sky.
Try this experiment. Look through your mysky recordings and see what channel you recorded stuff from. Bet you the majority of recordings are from FtA channels. They are in my wife's case
Of the 5 guys I work with who watch football, 1 will most likely purchase it, 1 is thinking about it but thinks that he probably won't as $150 a year plus extra costs is too much for 25-30 games a year, and 3 won't.
Interestingly 1 watches the A-league twice as much as the EPL and a couple others find that they lose interest about February each year when there is only 1 or 2 teams left in the competition who can realistically win it.
Looking at what you recorded is a bit misleading, As I want to watch sports live I watch live so don't record them. I record FtA so I can watch and remove adverts so even if I was watching at same time as it was on (well 15 minutes after the start) I am only doing it for other purposes.
You also need to add length of recordings into calculation, 1 recording of a 3 hour sports event is 3 one hours TV shows.
If only it was that simple Mantis. The shows she records are across all the channels, not only the FTA stuff. She is the sort of woman who will watch anything that is on, and on demand content just doesn't work as she is indecisive. Also, unless it can be controlled wholy by a remote and on the TV easily she won't use it.

Presumably that's the live figures. Obviously something that is usually on between 2pm and 10pm (except games in Perth could be a bit later in NZ time) is going to get more live viewers than something that is usually on between 2am and 7am (aside from a few games at 12am and between 7 and 9am, although the latter tend to be on Monday/Tuesday so people are at work anyway). Regardless of what the event is. Comparing live viewing figures for events in opposite timezones is not comparing like with like for me. Comparing A League viewing to NRL or Super 15 makes more sense since they're on at the same time so there's actually a choice to make.
If they could compare the total number of live views plus MySky recorders (do they know how many people record a certain programme?) then surely the number of EPL watchers would be signficantly higher.
Benoire: I wonder how many people watch the footy cos it was on Sky, but aren't really that interested enough to purchase a seperate sub?
Valid point, I only see this being picked up by the fanatics who get up at stupid hours every weekend, such as myself. I honestly don't see them getting close to break even.

I'll probably ditch Sky for this as the EPL was the main reason I got Sky. I watch other sports (mainly cricket, tennis and golf when it comes to the majors) but following my football team means more to me and is non-negotiable, regardless of cost. Aside from the odd show on UKTV, pretty much everything else I watch and record on MySky comes from the free channels. Similarly for my partner (I pay for the Sky due to her being a student with no job). She seemed upset when I mentioned I may cancel it until I made her realise that she only really watches a few things on Jones aside from the free channels. I'll happily buy a couple of boxsets she can keep forever instead of continue paying the monthly basic Sky and MySky fees for a few 40 and 50 year old programmes.
