Basically says Al Jazeera wanted the Aussie rights and in pursuit of those inadvertently spent more than expected on the NZ rights, and now may be looking to on-sell them to a local broadcaster to recoup costs. Or they might just set up a service in NZ.

You are quite right, Optus do have the rights. Maybe my recall of the conversation is not accurate. She did mention that Sky had bought the CL rights off Bein, so maybe she suggested that they would do so again with EPL?

I saw that too before but nothing was official, I remember last time that a 3rd party first got them then on sold to PLP. I think BEIN was trying to get Australia but both them and Foxtel were so much less than what Optus paid. Just my thoughts but I wonder if BEIN was trying for both Australia and NZ and then they would offer their channel here as a thru channel like they do in Australia.

Ouch. SMH is reporting that Optus is estimated to need 80,000 customers at $80/season to break even. And Telstra doesnt have 80,000 subs for NFL (@ $90/season) and AFL (@ $90/season).

Still if Optus does pitch EPL @ $80/season then all those unblockers will be driving NZ PLP subs to Australia.

Not really a like for like with the NRL or AFL as both of those are a tack on service not an exclusive service. The interesting thing about the NRL (not sure about AFL) is that subscription only lets you view the games on the same size as the device (can only be phones and tablets) it is registered to. If you have a 7inch screen and send to a 50 inch TV you only get 7 inch of the TV screen filled. I think it also doesn't allow some games to be viewed live either

Not sure what you mean by tack-on service vs exclusive. If I want to stream the NRL and I dont want Foxtel then I pay $3/wk to do so. And not exclusive to Telstra as a mobile subscriber. Sounds like Optus is going down the same path. I recall that the non-live games are the FTA exclusives - ie not pay. Will be interesting given the change in digital rights that Telstra has paid for cf previous rights. And the much higher price.

I was surprised at the low take up though. 26million people, low paytv penetration and a reluctance to pay big-bundle plus sport to get it. Drop foxtel, pay $3/wk (thats 40c a game if you watch all of them, or a cup of coffee if only watch one game). But no-one wants it? Odd.

I thought as much. It depends on how they do a separate service, would it be a streaming service or a thru channel like they do on FOXTEL. For it to work they would need to be able to do both I think or have a streaming service and have access on SKY but as part of the SKY Package cost not a add on.

Sorry. We're going to have a difference of opinion there. Of the nearly 7 million homes in Australia that dont have Foxtel only 80,000 want to watch AFL or NRL - and will happily watch a mix of live and delayed coverage on FTA, which may or maynot include their team. And will not part with a paltry $3/week to see the games that they cant watch. Personally I cant believe that.

Why would a household get a subscription to watch a game on a 7or so inch screen? The $3/wk only gets you access to a screen size the same as it is registered on and that has to be a phone or tablet.

I thought as much. It depends on how they do a separate service, would it be a streaming service or a thru channel like they do on FOXTEL. Bein costs an extra $20 per month on foxtel in australia and it's not broadcast in HD

Same for me this Morning. Tried all 3 browsers and website all messed up except when I went to sign in page, format fine, but then went back to crazy format.

when trying to watch a game said Flash was missing. I sent screen shots to PLP twitter but the usual have you installed Flash support response.

Will have to use Ipad app, but want to watch tomorrows game on Big screen.

If sky do get the rights, they best offer a similar subscription service !

I've subscribed both years and while I support the concept and think they have done a pretty good job I'm actually looking forward to getting these games back on Sky (if the rumours are true and they sub license it).

Watching on my tablet in bed is cool, but watching on my 50" plasma, my preferred medium, is a nightmare involving HDMI cables and a picture that is good but has nothing on Sky in HD. They just don't have enough devices supported to make it easy.

So it's a good effort by them but overall I would give them a 7/10 - could do better.

Fear it will be a new channel which we will have to pay sky extra, just like the rugby channel because of they have previously posted there isnt much of a business case for it so if you want it you can pay for it.

As a supporter of one of the minor teams and used PLP without issues, I fear we will just see the big names and will probably pay extra for it.
